Foetuses and dead babies dumped at rubbish tip

HAT YAI: -- Aborted foetuses and dead babies are being dumped at a rubbish tip in Songkhla's Hat Yai district by clinics which perform illegal abortions, according to a Bangkok Post report.

Garbage collector Roj Laksana, 40, said that foetuses are not a rare sight at the dump at Tambon Khuanlang. He told the Bangkok Post that he had seen at least 10 dead babies over the past two years.

Only last month, the body of a baby boy was found wrapped in a plastic bag, he said.

Mr Veerapol Wongyiamyod, a lawyer, said he believed the foetuses may have come from illegal abortion clinics in the district.

Mr Charun Yuthong, an academic at Prince of Songkhla University, said that promiscuous behaviour among the young led to the high abortion rate. He thought that lack of emotional comfort encouraged promiscuity.

Thai police said that drastic action would be taken against anyone found to have dumped dead babies.

The police would be running checks on clinics suspected of performing illegal abortions and discarding the foetuses.

The owner of a resort hotel in Hat Yai said several hotels provided sex videos to their customers, who were mostly teenagers.

Prices of hotel rooms were also reduced to 250 baht (S$10) for a short stay and 400 baht a night to draw young customers, many of them students.

He said all hotels were booked on Valentine's Day.

He had seen a girl in a student uniform riding pillion on a motorcycle at his resort hotel. He had since told his staff not to provide rooms to students or people aged under 18.
