PM orders urgent action on drought

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has ordered his cabinet ministers to mobilize forces to come to the rapid aid of villagers affected by drought.

Several government MPs from the predominantly agricultural northeastern region have informed the prime minister that drought is threatening local farmland, with farmers in Khon Kaen, Kalasin and Buri Rum provinces finding themselves without rain for their new rice crops.

The prime minister has ordered the Interior Ministry to conduct a survey of drought-afflicted areas, while each province has been asked to use government funding to ease the plight of farmers and villagers.

The Ministry of Defence, meanwhile, has been asked to mobilize troops to pump up water and dredge canals as a stop-gap measure to allow water into paddy fields.

Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives will work to create artificial rain, and the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment will set up a drought command centre.

Mr. Thaksin has vowed to eliminate the dual problems of drought and flooding if he is elected for another term in office.

The next general election is scheduled for early next year.

They'll have a job making rain from blue skies! Excuse my ignorance Mr PM, but I would have thought a basic principle of rain making is having clouds to seed, but as there haven't been any clouds in the skies of Isaan for over a month now, with mimimum humidity, it would seem rather futile. I can only assume the said officials are expected to take planes up at great expense to the tax payer and smothering us all with chemicals, to show on the evening news the govt. is "doing something".

A bunch of officials dancing naked, chanting mantras and invoking rain from the gods, would probably have more chances of success, and would provide a lot more entertaining viewing at a lesser cost. how about it, Tox?
