Hi 'macb', :o

Good picture you got.

I reckon the bungalows around the reservoir are for rent. Do they have bamboo barge for your leisure - like fishing or just floating down the stream ?

Had fond memory from staying in Kanjanaburi years ago, I like to do it again, this time may be in Petchaboon.

All the best,

Tink

Hello everyone

Had a busy 6 weeks doing a TEFL course, been a 600 kilometre round trip to Khon Kaen each weekend so I am tuckered out from all the driving. The course was good value tho, very enjoyable and worthwhile and I now have the certificate. Next thing on the agenda is to find a job, locally if possible. Had a spanner thrown in the works as the college I worked at in the middle east want me to come back in January, so I am thinking long and hard about that.

Going to have a couple of weeks R&R now tho, lots of fun jobs to do around the house and I also have a boat to finish off, good to see you are active again Tink, when are you due back in Phetchabun?

Time for brunch on the patio and then make a move on the unpacking

Hi Chris,

Congrates on the job well done on TEFL teaching certificate. :o

It gives you choices to pick where you want to work......LOS or Middle East.

I hope you got a teaching job somewhere around Petchaboon or her neighboring province, so that you can enjoy life with your Mrs. in your lovely new built house.

Best wishes to you.

Thanks Tink, hoping to find a full time school position here, now working part time at a Language Centre in Phetchabun, middle east is still a possibility though, could do with refilling the coffers especially as the £ has taken a nosedive recently! Hope to see you when you next visit

Cheers

For those that don't know and want to travel to Petchabun:

Take route 21 from Bangkok as you pass Suvanabum airport your branch off left for bang pa in. Then follow the signs for Petchabun. 7 k from Petchabun you pass through Ban Tok and an intersection with traffic lights, you will pass a Ptt garage on your right, then you will see Tesco superstore on your right and Big 'C'. you are now 1.7 k from the town.

Keep going for Bus station on your left then Kossit hill Hotel which is on your left, if you turn right at the first major set of lights in the town this will take you to the town centre. If you keep going through the second set of lights you will pass the Government hospital and then onto to Lom Sak some 30 k away.

Turning right at the first set of lights as aforementioned takes you into the town centre. There is a market we call the 5 bht mkt the reason being its 5 bht to park your truck. There is another market on the other side of town but on its location later.

I will post pictures in die course. As well as the new Tesco there is a Topland in the main town.

Banks shops stores.

I might add that the new Tesco has a Major Cineplex as well.

If you want to order UBC the main shop is around the corner from Topland not far from KFC.

There is a private hospital more on the location later.

Hi HBKK

No there is not a lot of info about Nong Phai on the net, I have lived here for almost 9 months, never had a problem in the area. I live between Nong Phai and Nachaliang, N P is a nice town, has a small Tesco Lotus which opened last month, 7-11, small hospital, a government vet, a good market and a good Honda Motorcycle shop. There are a couple of Farangs about, but not many and we all tend to keep to ourselves. I find the people in the area friendly and helpful and I feel at home here. Phetchabun City is 55 Kms from my home and is a good drive up the Route 21. Nachaliang is similar to Nong Phai and also has a good market and 7-11. As we have been so busy with one thing and another we don't tend to get out much or socialise and to be honest I don't miss it a bit, well maybe occasionally I feel like a good blowout but not often.

Hope this helps please feel free to contact me about anything else you would like to know

whe wil go tommorow to NongPhai for a week and looking around. Becauce my partner knows the area we plan to settle there, but its helpfull when farang also give information like you did because "hony we have everithing there" sometimes is very different with the reality. so thanks again.

More news:

If your living in the Petchabun city area and are on a Retirment/ marriage Visa, unless the rules change again you will have to go to NAN which is about 500 k away to the right of Chang mai for your renewal as Tha-li does not cover this area any more.

Of course for your 90 day stamp option you can go to any immigration office or do a postal notification, here is a link with the required documentation information below.

Hi Mac

I did the 90 day check in at Tha-Li last week, very friendly and relaxed atmosphere, I asked about reporting to their office by mail and they stated categorically no. They informed me that I would have to renew my retirement visa at Mae Sot on the Burmese border next time. I also asked them to do a certificate of residence for me, I had the documetation ready apart from the form, after much conversation and translating they said they don't do that either.

Already confusion rules!

Thanks for the info by the way

Chris

Hi folks,

I've been a silent reader to this forum for a while now and always enjoyed the news from LOS, especially from Phetchabun area. Helped me to spot down Scoogies on Google maps and made me wonder whether I should give playing golf a try. I'm an Austrian in my mid 30s. My wife's family lives near Wang Chomphu, where we've built a Baan for the in-laws and ourselves. In the long run we plan to move to Thailand, but for the time being I'm only visiting.

Two weeks from now I'll have my holidays in LOS, seeing the family and traveling a bit (CM and seaside). We don't have a fixed schedule for the trips, but definitely will be in Phetchabun area during Feb. 20-25. Would be great to meet some of you.

cheers

Andi

PS: I don't know of any zeelanders in wichienburi, but would be eager to hear of any boardgamers in or around amphoe muang (i.e. Settlers of Catan and stuff, not chess or checkers)

Aitch, I put a post on the immigration/visa forum about the new requirements for folk in Petchabun to go to Tak - Mae Sot border crossing for retirement and marriage extensions from now on. However if you have to visit your consulate for proof of income letter you can still use Suan Plu.!!

Immigration Police have a new list and when you present all your documents they will check where you live and then tell you which office to go for next renewal.

The residence certificate is a tricky one and you will hear of different ways. The British consulate will issue you one for a fee of approx 2210 Baht and you can collect following day or by post EMS for 100 Baht, that was last years fee's anyway.

I went to Suan Plu and on the second floor Room 206- its the overstay office!! you can apply for the residence certificate. You have to do a bit of waffling here!! as why you should want such a thing!! to the immigration officer and they will ask a photo copy of all pages/stamps of passport and study your last 90 day report slip + photocopy. I paid 100 Baht for EMS, which I am sure was a little tea-money, but seemed to do the trick.

I have mine for the Thai driving licence which is one of the requirements.

Alternatively if you are hail from a European country with a Gold/red/black flag you can go to your local Amphur with wife, shout very loudly at the yellow shirted one behind counter and walk away with a letter of proof of home!!! - Yes I heard that in Wichien market last week!!

Thanks Phutoie

I used to work in Sattahip and got the residence certificate from Jomtien Immigration on many occasions, fill in the form with photocopies, pay 200 Baht and there you go. The flag dit creased me up, "You vill giff me vot I vont unt I vill ask der qvestions!" :o:D

Cheers

Hi Cris and other future neighbours,

The trip to Nong Phai started with a warm welkome of my frends family, after finding a house the first day we drive around at the motercycle for a vieuw days. My impression of the Province Phetchabun is very possitif. Not far from bkk, good facilitys and beautiful surroundings.

Unfortianaly after a vieuw days we had a little slider with the moter and i ended up with very much pain in my knie. After the local dokters advice : don't move for a vieuw weeks , we did go back to bkk. Before leaving we see already that they start with making new electric, new windows, new roov, and fixing/replacing a lot of things in the house

In the hospital here they found out that its not broken but a lot of little marks on the picture. So already 1 week now with a spalk and today have to see the hospital again.

My frends mother checked the work at the new house and she say that the working people did a great job already and the are now painting the whole property in and outside. i thing for that money its great that the make a compleet renovation. We only have to pay a bit for replace the thai toilet for a western one in both of the bathrooms and put gardenland and stones in frond of the house.

hope can walk again the 15th and start to fix the garden:)we are tinking of grascarpet, anyone who have experiance with that?

Hi HBkk

sorry to hear of the slider and hope the knee's getting better, I am thinking of grassing a couple of lawns too, will start looking around for some green stuff soon. I am thinking of the low growing broad leafed plant which aint grass, Brits call it cabbage leaf, anybody know the Thai name for it?

Sounds as if your house is coming along fine good luck with it

Hi folks,

Scoogies has closed down now.... :o

Sad to hear. Hope it's for other reasons than health or bankruptcy, and Ian and his staff are doing well. Is there a new farang meeting point in town?

... we had a little slider with the moter and i ended up with very much pain in my knie.

I wish you all the best and a fast recovery, so that you can enjoy your new home.

The plant you are looking for is not the same as cabbage-leaf coneflower (Rudbeckia maxima), or is it? Googling for 'vernacular name cabbage flower' did not give any useful results (except for lots of cabbage recipies :D ). Tried to link to an image of coneflower, but I'm not allowed to (Newbie :D )

With only 2 weeks ahead now I'm getting really excited to visit Thailand again. Besides a trip to Chiang Mai (my wife's wish) and a week on some quiet beach (I insisted), I'm particularly keen to take a hike into Tat Mok National Park. I'm happy my wife agreed, because she usually is very worried about snakes. Is one day enough to enjoy the waterfalls, or is it advisable to stay overnight? We can't walk to far or fast as I hope our 5yr old nephew will come along

best regards

Andi

Hi Andi

thanks for the info on the cabage leaf, will have a look around and see if I can find some. Can't give any info on the national park you mention but they are usually pretty big and perhaps an overnight would be better. Have a safe trip and welcome!
