PM promises support for holder of fake peace bird

BANGKOK: -- Disappointment turned to jubilation yesterday for a Narathiwat girl who thought she had found the peace bird with Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s signature one it, after the prime minister announced that she would be invited to dine at the Government House despite the fact that the signature had been forged.

Mr. Thaksin, who conceded that 12 year-old Nureeta Malaimal had acted in good faith, said that he would allow her to dine with him at the Government House here, and would provide her with an educational scholarship if her case seemed deserving.

A number of people have come forward claiming to have found the prime minister’s bird since nearly 100 million 'origami birds' were dumped on Thailand's three southern border provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani last Sunday in a gesture of peace for the troubled region.

However, all the birds have so far proved to be forgeries.

Although the prime minister appeared initially to promise a job or an educational scholarship to whoever found his bird, recent comments indicate that he has already backed down from this suggestion.

How difficult would it be to follow through on this and give one kid an education, or one adult a decent job? And these clowns in BKK wonder why they are so disliked and not trusted in the south...

or aim at giving the opportunity to every child for a decent education and the opportunity to every adult for a decent job. But idea's like that never funded a new airbus :o

Be kind to Dr Toxin. He's down to his last $US 4 billion. Frivolous spending could ruin his future. :D

It's not a question of how much one has. It's the principle of not giving away something for nothing.

The little girl ALREADY got a free hot meal at a place 99.9% of Thais will never get a chance to... we don't want to have young children getting used to freeloading. Giving away things sure feels good, but in the end can do more harm than good.

How many jobs do AIS, SC Asset, SC Matchbox, etc. etc. provide to the local economy? It's not like it's all take and no give.

The one bird bearing Thaksin's signature was probably removed by someone hoping to get $ from it or somehow  never made it onto a plane.

:o:D:D ...or it'll be carried by very strong southerly winds to Bangkok, where it lands in the back garden of a police general - the very same general who was in charge of hiding it in the dozens of sacks that were released in the south. What a coincidence! Some people are just born lucky....

With the recent stagnation of the Stock Exchange, it's estimated that Thaksin's net worth has slipped below his earlier 1(ONE) Trillion baht. With this in mind, it's apparent he has to start watching his satangs and that's why he's backed off from the scholarship pledge.

you're right.... it's only, to borrow your figure, 99.9% take and 00.1% give. :o

I don't have a problem with desiring to not become a society where citizens are reliant on handouts but one shouldn't make such promises in the first place if they have no intention of ultimately keeping their word. :o

and maybe the thai government should adhere to this principal when handing out contracts?

and the return he would get from decently educating the thai people would be them realising how criminal the majority in control really are.

the amount of money he paid for his offspring to enter university and pass their macdonalds degrees would have financed more than one poor childs education.

Actually in the contract situation, those giving out the contracts and those who receice said contracts are BOTH decidedly getting "something." Typically stacks of purple or grey bank notes.

The same for when you pay the 'pae yia' to get your children into the local educational system (or even the tier 1 private school system in most places in the US... ever notice the blank on the application where you note how much you will pledge to the school?) They get their fee, your kids get to go to the school of your choice. Nowadays, for some schools, you need to pay this fee BEFORE your child is even born (reserving his/her place in class 4-5 years in advance).

All the poor do, when they climb their way out of rags to riches.... is behave exactly like the rich have always done since time immemorial (they buy the same houses, the same cars, and pay the same fees for their kids to go to school).

:D
