State Of Emergency Declared

Recommended Posts

Tonight I watched the showing of pictures of a father of a radio station commentator in Chang Mai being killed. It was clear in many pictures uniformed police just stood to the side and took no action,

...

where did you watch it? unfortunately that killing somehow i doesn't got covered by the news so well and i try to find some more information about it.

Well here is a little new to sate your thirst.....From The Nation

ASTV head office hit with bomb attacks

A news announcer was slightly injured when ASTV's head office was attacked with bombs.

An ASTV security guard, Pornchai Sanguanpoj, 41, told police that the assailants arrived on a white boat and threw two bombs against the head office on Phra Arthit Road at 2 am.

Pornchai said the assailants also fired an M79 at the building.

The explosions shattered the glass windows of ASTV, and Natthawut Mitmak, a TV announcer, suffered cuts over his hand while he was ducking for cover.

But ASTV officials would not allow police to enter the compound to investigate.

Pornchai himself was arrested when police found 6 rounds of 11-mm caliber pistol on him. He said he was shooting back at the assailants when police arrived at the scene so he threw his gun into the river.

Yep arrest the guard, so the next attack can succeed.......

mhm, we could read it also the other way. someone who throw is weapon inside the river at the moment the police arrived, got search by them and he carry ammo with him. guess he is't not allowed to do so. why he threw his his gun away? probably also trying to flee the scene. odd for the security to do so if the police arrive, or not? so what should the police do? let him go or arrest him? not hundert% sure, cause i saw the arrest here on thai TV but didn't pay so much attention on TV but TVforum, reading on the computer screen. the arrested was also wearing a body armor vest. and looked unhappy and stressed, cause got caught. and he was not your typical somchai security, with a little bit over sized white uniform shirt. sleeping all day in his plastic chair. that guy looked more like a real professional, ex-army or something like that. and he could spot an M79 in the dark or identify by the moise that M 79 make. i had to google what a M79 is at all.

can understand that they arrested him. it's the job of the police or not?

and second it's odd thatASTV didn't let the police inside. what do they hide?

but in the end The Nation breaking news, don't give so much that every detail got reported correctly. and har har, don't waste your time to wait for an update.

and next time you copypasta news. or quote something, please bring also the link to the original source. as long it is an english language newspaper it's by the forum rules allowed to do so. thanks.

anyway try to find out what a M79 is and saw the first picture i immediately know i saw it before. in a cinema movie.

It is UNSTABLE. What planet are you living on?

Unstable in political terms...Yes..but does that mean the PAD is going to break down my hotel door and and strangle me with a yellow shirt..should i and every other farang leave the country by train??

If you want to live in a country that respects democracy, personal freedom and the rule of law you should leave any way you can. None of those three items apply to Thailand. And if you have children here, do you want them to live in a place with no sunshine laws, where information to the public from ALL public agencies is restricted and where they can't go more than five years without a coup? Get on that train brutha! I'm leaving by plane in the next few weeks when flights start running. I started packing today. NO KIDDING.

Are you having a garage sale?

And a nervous-looking Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat goes on TV to tell us that he has received a set of decorations from the Peruvian government!

What a thoughtless, tactless, unintelligent move from a country's leader.

Best he not let banned Thai Rak Thai'er Suwat around them or they'll be absconded with like Olympic gold medals...

"But Suwat denied the reports, telling reporters Tuesday that he only borrowed the medal from Udomporn for a day in order to make a genuine gold replica of it as a special gift for her, :D and would return the medal back to her by a Thai Airways flight."

Make a replica for her when she held the real thing? :o

I was supervisor of riot control squad in maximum security prison in NY for 15 years and have dealt with many situations involving barricaded people, hostage situations , riots, etc. This is the procedure they should use. First, they must calculate ICT and LCT of chemical agentsGas) to be used. This is a formula based on cubic area of the enclosed area where gas will be deployed. ICT is the concentration of agent which will incapacitate the target subjects so they will either evacuate the area or be physically removed. LCT is the cncentration which will cause death to exposed people within 1 hour. In NY we used CS gas which has more severe effects on the targets than CN(tear Gas) but is also less lethal. Then you must decide which form of dispersal system. Mainly hand grenades or projectile grenades. In enclosed quarters such as airport non-combustibal grenades must be used. Then before deploying the agent you must first announce to the target subjects it will be deployed, and anyone with heart condition or respiratory problems should vacagte the premises as they could die as a result of exposure. All people with contact lenses should take them out as gas will fuse lenses to the retina.

Gas should be deployed in pre-determined location to force targets into desired evacuation area. They must have an escape route or they will turn against the response team in panic. When gas is deployed, response team will wait for agent to take effect before moving in. They should enter in phalanx formation with shields and push any targets still remaining in area into evacuation location. Once outside, target subjects should be restrained with flex-cuffs and placed in open air. They should be told not to rub their eyes prior to this as it makes gas effects worse. After everyone removed they should get imediate medical treatment and decontamination. In this case I feel they should treat innocents(Non-protestors) first. After evacuation, open all window and doors, place fans near exits and turn off air con as heat helps diissipate the agents. Also then they must search for any explosives or booby trapls left as scene,

ASTV Office Hit by Gunfire

Early this morning at close to 2 am, unidentified men on a boat shot at the ASTV Office from the Chaopraya River. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.

At 1.50 am, explosions and gunfire were heard at the ASTV office on Phra Arthit Road on the side adjacent to the Chaopraya River.

The incident disrupted a live news broadcast of News1 station with bullets hitting the studio but fortunately the anchor for the news program was able to duck in time and did sustained slight injuries from the glass fragment.

Damages were sustained to the glass on all four floors of the building.

PAD volunteer guards said they saw a boat driving from the Rama VIII Bridge heading for the Pinklao Bridge. When the boat neared the ASTV office, unidentified men shot M-79 grenades at the fourth floor of the building, believed to be targeting the satellite dish on the roof of the building. However, the bombs hit the netting around the office instead and the glass on the fourth floor.

Since the PAD rally happened, the ASTV and Manager offices have been the target of various forms of violence.

Im not quite sure the Thai police do it that way judging from previous incidents. I also doubt they have enough trained in proper crowd/riot control. Also it is highly likely that the police units most loyal to the government will be used. this could involve the notorious border police.

Thankyou Bassmaster50 for that very detailed explanation of the correct procedures to be used. However, this is Thailand and not New York. The police tactics are more likely to involve a battered Toyota Pick-up, an old Taser that someone has forgotten to recharge, and 3 cans of pepper spray purchased from a Sukhumvit street seller.

Can anyone tell me if all these problems are spilling out in to the country or is it staying in Bangkok my wife spoke to her mother on the phone last night and said everything was normal :o

As long as u r not an airport user, life goes on as normal. People still goes to Tesco / Centre etc doing shopping. Goes to work and school as normal. Rush hour traffic just as heavy. Glue to their soap at night, etc.

However, I would not like to be one of the traveller happen to be about to leave Thailand. I would be stuck in a hotel somewhere, most likely pay my own bill, and spending half a day at the airline office asking when could they bring me home.

Don't dig some sentences in his whole speeches to post such a comment. His 2 speeches so far showed that he carefully chose words. Khun Samak didn't have this skill.

Each speech lasted about 10-15 minutes. I wish all of you could understand Thai.

Please do not forget that this is Thailand. The police do not have a wearhouse to choice and pick. They only have a few boxes of expired cheap chinese what-ever. They probably have exhasuted that during the last confrontation. The next shipping may be stuck in the airport cargo which they have no access.

:D ...The SILENCE is ear deafening.....07.30AM in Bangkok....and no -important- news.....??? :o

LaoPo

This is how I feel too. I fully expected to awake and find either a coup or the airports surrounded by police. But we reprtedly have nothing beyond a the usual nightly bombs and gunfire reports.

Either nobody actually has the power to do anything or there are some tense negotaitions going on imho.

It could just be the calm before the storm.

I'm going back to bed for a couple of hours, and I can sleep through anything :D

Or the government has stifled media coverage in accordance with their rights under a state of emergency. It makes perfect sense too. If things get nasty, why advertise it to the country and whole world if you don't have to?

Any PAD supporters still holed up at the airport have ZERO sympathy from me if they get hurt or killed. They know what they did, they know what's coming. You can't just seize an international airport and expect to be greeted with flowers and cookies.

If they had seized the JFK or L.A. airport, it would have ended a long time ago, and probably much worse than the Thai police will hopefully end it tonight. As far as I'm concerned, if you run past security at the JFK or L.A. airport, protesting something or not, you get shot in the back before you get anywhere. The Thai government and police have been more than patient, but enough is enough.

Oh yeah killing people and taking away their freedom of speech will solve everything...............NOT!!!

It's good to see that Thailand is more civilised and democratic then the US is and allows freedom.

So a few people get stranded, is that the end of the world?

Violence begats violence

and something maybe teargas but writing in english so no body can read it, Expirationdate 13/2/1998.

Some army outside told them that their wife is inside and he shoot them to dead if she is hurt.

Some other police told that some Army are with heavy weapons inside.

Some one told that the Army is staging a coup and big problem come....

200 other rumors which result in the best solution to avoid any problems is to do nothing.....

Bassmaster50: thank you for the informations.

Hi All.

Why o why do so many posters on t.v want to see a repeat of October 7th?

To me that only brought shame onto the Government of Thailand, and the police who carried it out, No one accepting responability.

So a few posters miss flights, saaad, and they want blood because of it.

I would think they need to be ashamed.

Only need an innocent beautiful woman crying on his shoulder (I would suggest Somchais wife) and he'll clear the airports.

OK, as I expected (and said on Tues. in another thread), the SoE has been declared. No surprise here, whatsoever.

Let's skip to the end game and work backwards. The military supports the power group we can't discuss on TV. Thaksin, who has been perceived as a threat to this power group, has publicly said he is returning and will re-enter Thai politics. This leaves the military no choice. Expect to see a national unity government installed with the power to change the constitution which will install new politics structured so that democratic elections going forward will not allow the northeast to again elect people perceived to be a threat to that power group the military protects.

Now, how to get from a PPP led government with a majority of seats to a national unity government? For sure, PM Somchai is no fool, hence, we are seeing his reticence to quit and/or dissolve parliament. He knows there is an outside chance if he does dissolve parliament that some of his coalition parties could join with the Dem's, kicking the PPP out.

The ball is therefore in the military's court. From Anupong's comments, he doesn't want to act too soon, but as he has already said, he can do a coup in one hour. Recent troop movements makes that all the more possible and rumors are rife in Bangkok that something may happen tonight.

I think Anupong will play a bit more of a waiting game than that to see if a civil war starts (UDD - red vs. PAD - yellow). If it does, then he can enter the fray as the good guy restoring peace to Bangkok. If he sees the PAD being strong armed too violently by the police, that would be another invitation to jump in. He would much prefer a catalyst to where the military coming in is viewed as the peacekeeper, not as a takeover force. It always looks better to be invited into a house than breaking the front door down.

Anyway, one way or another, the military will protect those they are sworn to protect and in doing so I believe will install the national unity government that has been talked about for so long and ultimately, new politics will be installed.

my god...

how can paople say things such as "lets break some eggs" and "they should stop this with any means".

Protest is the heart of our democracy. If you could fly to thailand with your foreign money to make your bellies bigger, sitting on your desks, and talking shit, because you know how "things should be", its just because you come from a country well we had MUCH BIGGER protests than these in the past..

how pathetic.

What a waste of human brain.

The total absence of any criticism.

I am totally disgusted by most of comments here.

Bravo!!!

Nice to see decent people exist!

If tear gas is not available and/or the cops don't know the quality/condition or procedures of use;

Fry up a whole bunch of hot peppers, put some big ol' fans behind them and.......

ooops, on 2nd thought, that would work to clear the hall of westerners - but the Thais would take it in stride.

is it really that simple? I guess most here would agree that Hitler had it right when he squashed any protests against his democratically elected government

Argh! stop it please, get your history right.

I've heard this repeated over and over during recent discussions. Hitler didn't win any democratic elections, he was appointed Chancellor by the elected president after losing an election on the pressure the Nazi party and recession brought on the government of the time.

So if that event has any resemblance with the current situation it would be the PAD acting the part of the Nazi party trying to topple the government.
