Thailand to seek int'l cooperation against internet pornography

BANGKOK: -- Thailand will ask for international cooperation to fight against internet pornography, local press reported on Wednesday.

The government would put its proposal forward through diplomatic channels and at several international forums Thailand will host next year, Vice Culture Minister Weerasak Kowsurat was quoted by the newspaper Nation as saying.

The next Asia Cooperation Dialogue could be a good occasion to raise the topic with Asian leaders, said Weerasak.

In a bid to suppress the flow of illegal content in cyberspace, Thailand will seek to initiate an international legal agreement to criminalize websites and online games that portray sexual and other forms of violence -- wherever it originates.

"Existing international law does not tackle these problems. They mostly concentrate on paedophile material," Weerasak said.

"We will target the suppliers. It is the operators, not the users," he said.

With growing population using internet service, how to regulate websites' content has become a hot topic in Thailand.

Groups protecting children's rights have called for effective ways to prevent youngsters from browsing web pages containing violent or pornographic contents.

Software producers have also developed related software to help parents filter websites for their kids.

On both sides of the high way to Bangkok's international airport, large billboards have been erected to promote software aimed at preventing kids visiting pornographic websites.

Earlier in December, the Information and Communication Technology Ministry said pornographic websites topped the list of 2,500 websites blocked by the ministry in the past two years.

The original episode of Star Trek Voyager springs to mind...

in which a powerful lifeform was protecting a weaker lifeform from the evil lifeform on the next planet. This protection went on for hundreds of years until the all powerful protector lifeform one day died. The people it took care of had become so used to their protector being there all the time, they were hopelessly unprepared for the realities of life and were subsequently attacked, now that they were completely defensless.

Something like 70 percent of internet traffic is porn. Nothing can possibly change that. I agree and it saddens me that this takes away innocense at a younger age as the kids surf the net but that's todays reality I'm afraid. Best that can be done is educate parents into setting up adequate PC security and control.

Where?

All the naughty news groups have gone.

If it is on a web site you need a credit card for access.

Not much for the kids, thank God.

I reckon the web is a lot cleaner these days than it used to be.

Comments like this one make good newpaper headlines, but I am not sure

they are borne out in reality.

I can just see this international cooperation... like all censorship efforts, it will result in promotion of the most extreme opinion as the only way to keep it together- and so it will fall apart.

The Saudis: Well, on the risque programs you can show a woman's wrists.

The Americans: Are you kidding? Give us bikinis! But all of the breasts must be covered!

The Thais: No, just the nipples!

The Japanese: What's the big hangup you guys have about breasts?

The Dutch: What are all of you talking about?

"Steven"

Porn is an engine behind many technologies.

Porn made streaming video popular, and broadband, creditcard pay systems, and huge harddisk to store it all. :o

It is the reason we were stuck with a video system VHS, because Mr. Philips decide that on their system there will be no porno tapes. So nobody bought it.

Now video on demand is starting, i suspect a lot of it will be porn movies.

Unfortunately not the best things for kids to see but so are many other things like violence and war.

I am a parent myself, although they are still young, it is my duty to protect them from unwanted things. Don't need a government for that.

The internet was propagated by geeks for two reasons - porn and chat - would you like to see my acsii porn collection :D

Vice Culture Minister Weerasak Kowsurat

an unfortunate translation of his title - :D

support bacteria - its the only culture some people have.

I do not think many of these people understand - even if they physically disconnect the country from the outside world , it is not hard or expensive to set up a radio link to cross the divide.

send the man back to washing pigeon turds off statues, maybe that is something he could discuss with authority. :o

I hate to sound like a porn expert but I suppose i am, being the sleazy guy that I am.

I'm afraid you're wrong on this one Astral. There is a shed load of porn availible free of charge and no credit card or any king of age verification required. Bit for byte, the vast majority of internet traffic is P2P file shares downloading large porn movie files etc etc, free to view porn sites... so on and so forth. That's aside from the vast quantity of pay sites (this sort of porn is legal in most countries, Thaksin's only using internet porn as an easy prey, to add vitriol to his crusade) that are out there in the ether.

Lets look at his record for a couple of years... Children curfued, internet cafe's ordered to close, resulting in no one being able to surf at night, even if you're a 60 yr old tourist wanting to check his email... alchohol and bar restrictions similar to that of the UK (crappy no fun can't go out when you want, even if on holiday) ....

oh I'm not even going to bother typing, you know all this anyways. Not my country anyway, I can't teel 'em what to do. I'm just waiting for him to ban sex, or something, saying it's evil.
