Thailand-Laos to have ferry link soon

BANGKOK: -- Thailand and Laos will have a ferry link between the two sisters' countries for the first time next year.

Laos has started constructing structures for the ferry link between Laos' Khammuon Province and Thailand's northeastern province of Nakhon Phanom.

The Ministry of Transport of the two countries signed an agreement on the project recently.

The project, estimated to cost Bt64 million, is financially supported by the Thai government.

The ferry link across the Mekong River is scheduled to be opened for people of the two countries in late 2005.

Where did that quote come from ?

Yes there was a ferry at Nong Khai before the bridge was built.

There has also been a ferry crossing the mekong at Nakhon Pranom for as long as I can remember, which is about ten years.

There was one there even going back 15 years. Although mainly for ferrying vehicles between Nakorn Phanom town and Tha Kaek in Laos, foot pedestrians could also use the ferry service.

Don't even see the need for boats specially for scuttling tourists to and fro. :o
