Hi All --

I'd like to make the following announcement:

The Bangkok Expats' Association will have its final *formal* meeting at The Office Bar & Grill Sunday, August 31st 11:30 A.M. - 2:00 P.M.  Police Senior Sergeant Major Kanit will be making a presentation about the various types of visas available to foreigners in Thailand, the new visa fee schedule (which is much more expensive than before), the requirements for each kind of visa, the procedures for applying for each kind of visa, and to answer any questions about this topic.  A buffet brunch will be available (optionally) at 100 baht/person.  PSSM Kanit will begin his presentation at 12:15 P.M. sharp.  A formal meeting of the BEA will begin at 1:15 P.M., after PSSM Kanit has completed his presentation and fielded questions from the audience.

*Informal* social meetings of BEA members will continue Tuesday evenings 5-8 P.M. at The Office Bar & Grill.

Starting Sunday, September 7th, the BEA will be meeting at Bourbon Street Restaurant in Washington Square 3-5 P.M.  Washington Square is accessible from Sukhumvit Road across from and immediately west (towards Soi Asoke) from Sukhumvit Soi 33 and from Sukhumvit Soi 22.  If entering from Sukhumvit Road, go left at Mambo Cabaret and follow the drive; you'll have to turn right, then at the back of the square turn right again; the restaurant is about 30 meters down on your left.  If entering from Sukhumvit Soi 22, if you're walking just walk straight in and look for the restaurant on your right; if driving, you need to turn left at the first opportunity and circle the central group of buildings to make your way back around to Bourbon Street.  The restaurant has 2 rooms, the one you enter and a second room off to the left; it is in the room to the left that we'll be meeting.

At our inaugral meeting the 7th, noted locally-based Canadian novelist/writer Christopher G. Moore will be discussing his literary efforts (which are hugely popular with the expatriate communbity here).  You can obtain Chris' various novels and other works at Asia Books and other outlets as well as from his web site, located at www.cgmoore.com.

On September 14th, locally-based American novelist/writer Dean Barrett will be speaking about his well-known novel "Memoirs of a Bangkok Warrior," contrasting Thailand of the Vietnam War years to contemporary Thailand, and his place in each.

Later in September the writer/photographer/oil painter/gemologist/Burma expert/ adventurer extraordinaire Richard K. Diran will be making a presentation about Burma -- from which he will have just returned after being a guest of a luxury cruise line on a river cruise in far northern Burma.

Still to be scheduled is Andy Wing, owner of Expats' Motors, who will be speaking about all the details involved in buying a used car in Thailand.

Everyone is welcome to join us.  We hope the change of Sunday venue will make The Bangkok Expats' Association more attractive to people hesitant to go to a bar.  Bourbon Street Restaurant has a well-deserved global reputation, and will be celebrating it's 17th birthday in September.  Though Cajun food holds pride of place on the menu, there are extensive offerings of international and Thai cuisines, all excellent and affordable.  The service is impeccable and low-key.

I want to give a special public thanks to Bourbon Street owner DOUG HARRISON for making his premises available for our use.  Doug is extremely active in community activities here in Bangkok and enjoys a hard-earned reputation for his participation in those activities.  We have awarded Bourbon Street Restaurant founding corporate sponsor status for Doug's kindness to us.

Please DO feel free to join us.  I'm working on a discount group holiday at Koh Chang in early December -- the more the merrier.

Mekhong Kurt, Actin President

The Bangkok Expats' Association
