joe beets Posted January 2, 2005 Share Posted January 2, 2005 If you're in Bangkok, and have time and a few working muscles, you might want to help out at the RTAF base at Don Muang. I got their number from Metropolis 107 -- it's 02-534-6400 . My GF tried the no. yesterday morning, and they said don't bother, too many volunteers; but when I called again last night, they said sure, c'mon by. Coming from the city it's the first exit past the international terminal. I was there today, and it looks as though there's still a lot left to do. There were tons of people, but I was diligent and always found somewhere to pitch in, right up to the time I fell off the %#&*ing truck and made my splashy exit in an ambulance. If anyone has a contact number(s) for volunteering on Phi Phi, I'd appreciate it. I will fly down and bring with me what I can (clothes, medicine, food, etc). What would be the best way to go? Does anyone know where the best place (as of Jan 5) to head out to is? Where can muscle and language skills be used the most at this point in time (late in the game, I know)? Khao lak? Phuket? Phuket? Thanks, <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I've had food poisoning for the past 4 days, so couldn't donate blood here in Koh Samui. Went to the hospital today and the blood bank appears to be full. I talked to a Thai friend who had just arrived home two days ago from Khao Lak. He suggested Khao Lak since it was the worst hit. There are already alot of people on Phuket. He rented a jeep with 3 friends and drove out there. He said that they took many things with them, but didn't need much other than face masks. He stated that the relief efforts there were very disorganized. They were there to help and many people needed help, but no one to tell them what they could do. Instead of gettin on the plane with now lead I am looking for a place where my help is really needed. I hope someone can help me out with some contacts. My profile: Who am I? - I'm 29 years old - lived abroad quite some time, know how many people in asia live - been in most disaster places - I already have most vacinations, busy with getting the rest - married with two children - work in the ICT (Abn Amro Bank) as third level support - large perseverance - good will - finished polytechnic mechanical engineering What can I do? - speak and write fluent english - speak some german - install water piping - plumbing - install electrics (be aware I'm not an electricien, but I can install sockets, switches) - rebuild home - do hard labour - adjust easily to situations and solve practical problems - install networks (computer, some telephones) - paving - many more ...
