camerata
There was a Chinese mini-series called Kamnerd Jao-mae Kuan Im that was a big hit on Thai TV in the mid-80s. It's about Princess Miao-shan/Kuan Yin, a.k.a the Bodhisattva Avalokitasvara and Goddess of Mercy. Although it isn't easy to find (try Chinatown, Bangkok), there's an 11-disk VCD version dubbed in Thai with no subtitles. Despite extremely cheesy 80s soap opera special effects (like green lightning coming out of characters' hands) and tacky touches such as Amida having a gold swastika plastered on his chest, it's kind of interesting to see the Chinese take on Kuan Yin and Amidism. I lent it to a friend whose young daughter was fascinated and watched the whole thing in 2 days. Now she wants to be like Kuan Yin and she won't pull the wings off any more insects.
