If you have never done it......download the Photomatix program free...and post pix with the watermark showing is OK. Tip... I usually shoot hand-held with my camera set to AE Bracket at One full f-stop so i get one under, and one over, and normal. Photomatix will align pix for you........ best to use Aperture priority and have a fast shutter....using an exposure which alters the aperture can affect the DOF. Also if you have an old pic which looks OK....but only one shot....then make a copy of it in windows explorer...and load the copy and original into Photomatix....it can still give nice results..... Dogs Songkran (was not a Challenge) 4. Thai Landscapes Interesting to see how HDR will be received as challenge #5. Personally I love messing around with HDR but feel that as a challenge topic it might be a bit limiting for some. I would suggest a topic that anyone with any camera would be able to shoot a pic and enter it into the 'Challenge' without having to learn new processes and download additional software. Pseudo HDR using single images is not technically HDR btw. I jotted down a list of 'Challenge' ideas on the Landscape voting thread and left out some topics that would require additional hardware/software. Participation should be a lot better than it is in the challenges, I think that getting 'technical' would limit participation even further. Of course the idea of the 'Challenges' is exactly that it should be a challenge. To learn new techniques and processes, to get out (or stay in) and take photos and exercise our creativity. Maybe a monthly 'Technical Challenge' would be a good idea for the more technically inspired among us? and choose topics for the normal challenges that would enable anyone to enter. I'll repost the list of ideas I wrote as that thread is now closed. fabianfred Posted June 11, 2009 Share Posted June 11, 2009 I understand that HDR is a bit of a challenge for the happy snappers...but the Photomatix software IS free....and it can turn some quite ordinary pix into something much better..... and no need to use anything like Photoshop....... Even the pseudo HDR (tone-mapping) is easy and no need to mess with the many controls in a Photoshop program....with Photomatix it is just easy sliders ...to see the results instantly. I love harleys too...so maybe we could make the subject Harleys (and their clones) and nothing older than a month..to get people out there snapping.... but then those stuck on the farm would complain too.... I know many here at TV are not actually in Thailand...so a Thai subject would be restricting too Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Very nice too.... i do like the HDR images like this one which are 'subtle'...as well as the more easily recognised type. good bit of steel there too. I didn't try to remove the graininess since I like that in black and white photos. In fact, in some b/w portraits I have taken, I have introduced grain for effect. I find the square on the riverbank slightly distracting, but that's a matter of personal taste. Was this created with a single shot? Nonetheless a great image. At first i was put off by the dark sky...but then seeing the tones of the rest reminded me of those old lithographic pictures which have been hand-tinted and often illustrated books about asia at the turn of the last century. I could have taken this into photoshop and blended the sky to get rid of the muddy look...but decided I like it just the way it is now.
