thaihome
So where would a Issan speaking person from Sa Kaeo fit into your poll? Geographically I guess it is lower North East (but not Kymer speaking person in sight!) but then again, often included in Eastern Region, but nowhere near the coastal provinces. Even with 15 choices you couldn't cover all the possibilities. TH
buadhai
OK, so now I have to add "urban Chinese" from Korat....
Jai Dee
I don't suppose a poll can handle all 76 provinces (in alphabetical order): Amnat Charoen, Ang Thong, Buriram, Chachoengsao, Chai Nat, Chaiyaphum, Chanthaburi, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Chon Buri, Chumphon, Kalasin, Kamphaeng Phet, Kanchanaburi, Khon Kaen, Krabi, Krung Thep Mahanakhon (Bangkok), Lampang, Lamphun, Loei, Lop Buri, Mae Hong Son, Maha Sarakham, Mukdahan, Nakhon Nayok, Nakhon Pathom, Nakhon Phanom, Nakhon Ratchasima, Nakhon Sawan, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Nan, Narathiwat, Nong Bua Lamphu, Nong Khai, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Pattani, Phangnga, Phatthalung, Phayao, Phetchabun, Phetchaburi, Phichit, Phitsanulok, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Phrae, Phuket, Prachin Buri, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Ranong, Ratchaburi, Rayong, Roi Et, Sa Kaeo, Sakon Nakhon, Samut Prakan, Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram, Sara Buri, Satun, Sing Buri, Sisaket, Songkhla, Sukhothai, Suphan Buri, Surat Thani, Surin, Tak, Trang, Trat, Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani, Uthai Thani, Uttaradit, Yala, Yasothon. chanchao
Feel free to collect the data into just those 5 standard groups. But I did want to allow for some more diversity. So up to you where you put 'Sa Kaew'. It's not like her head will be gullotined off if you pick the wrong group. If her area is Isarn speaking then I'd still pick 'upper North East', but I'm equally fine with Lower NE or even Central is that's the local lingo there. You will always have some borderline provinces; Petchabun is another. Up to you where you put that.
chaladmak
does it really matter - where from? as long as she is nice person. although I heard something like those from South are jai dam, but from North and east - jai dee. is it true? buadhai
I see that once again I'm the odd person out -- only one with an SO who's "Urban Chinese". I mentioned these categories to her and she seemed a little put out that the rest were geographic and that only the urban Chinese were singled out as to ethnicity.... chanchao
> I mentioned these categories to her and she seemed > a little put out that the rest were geographic and that > only the urban Chinese were singled out as to ethnicity.... Not at all. With lower NE I hinted at Khmer origins, in North Hilltribe I hinted at several hilltribes which would be a separation from the other 'North' catergory only based on ethnicity. For the North I also suggested 'Muang' people, who would consider themselves of different heritage than Isarn, Central or South. Different language too. Wherever possible I tried to keep pretty close to ethnic/linguistical lines rather than just geographic. Urban Chinese is a valid category because it would likely be misinterpreted if some guys have a wife from Had Yai (Deep South / "Muslim") who is however of Chinese descent and not too different culturally from Chinese Thais in Nakhon Sawan or Khorat. Kerryd
My partner(s) are from "Up to you", usually. Not sure where that is on the map though. One fine lady I knew insisted she was from Laos. Petchabun to be exact. Looked and looked all over maps of Laos, couldn't find Petchabun anywhere. (Obviously) I found out Petchabun was in Thailand, but her family was from Laos, and they still considered themselves Lao, not Thai.
