I've noticed many of them will very often tell you they are Chinese, then when I speak to them in Mandarin it goes into that Deer in the Headlights look. This usually makes my wife smirk. She's a woman brought up and college educated in the US, but is clearly Lao, so is a bit of a coconut. Didn't stop a Sino Thai shop girl when we were shopping for a wedding dress in Bangkok demand to see her hands, just to check she wasn't a farmer!
