Hi,

I've recently been through the same exercise myself here in Phuket. You will find that there are surprisingly few options in the size of boat that you're looking for, particularly centre console as most small power boats tend to be the 'speedboat' types, and most of them with inboard stern drives which are expensive to run and maintain. You should also consider where to keep the boat. The main options are:

a. Marina (there are 4) berth. These usually have a charge for a minimum of 8 metres which typically equates to 10,000 baht/month. They will usually charge you half berth rate if you have a trailer and leave it on hard standing.

b. There are some sheltered bays and areas where you can install a mooring (Chalong Bay, Rawai Beach, Ao Yon), which shouldn't cost you anything, though obviously are not secure, and the boat will need more maintenance.

c. If on trailer, either at home if you have the space, or rent some land. I know that Max-Marine-Asia also offer secure storage in their showroom.

Also to be considered is the transfer of registration of the boat, and getting a boat licence (both required to be legitimate).

Last week I concluded the purchase of a 16' Boston Whaler with a 90 hp outboard. This boat was imported by one of the Marina's a couple of years ago as a stock boat when they applied to be an agent for Boston Whaler. The first time the boat was in the water was when I took it for a sea trial, so effectively is new. I got it for 700,000 baht, which is a substantial discount on the new price, and have the benefit of the factory warranties for both the boat and engine commencing with my ownership. Probably all of the other purchases (new trailer, GPS, anchors, lines, fenders etc, etc), and licence fees, came to an additional 150,000 baht.

I don't profess to being an expert, but as I said, I've just gone through the whole process, so if there's something specific you want to know about, PM me and I may be able to help.

As another point of reference, a friend of miine recently bought a 4 year old 2nd hand Zodiac rib center console with a 40 hp Johnson outboard. He paid 300,000 baht total and that included a trailer.

One of the main things that I would consider is how big a motor do I need and can I afford a 4 stroke outboard. I have not owned one but the stories of reliability and fuel economy never end.

I have a liveaboard trawler here in Phuket.

When searching for my dinghy I came acrossed a Thai builder of fiberglass boats in Chumporn. I did not buy from him but he makes some boats that might be worth considering.

Let us know how it goes.

Hi minefield,

16' is a bit small better to step up to 18-20'

I helped a friend buy a boat similar to the one you're after. There are good deals to be found, if you have time. If you have money you can order a boat from overseas or a Thai built to your specs. In the size your looking for expect to spend 400000 to 2000000 baht.

There was a very nice cat with trailer in Pattaya for sale asking 1.4 it had twin 90 Honda and fully fitted for coastal fishing. Not sure if he still has it but a lot of boat for a great price. Look at the cost of a new Honda 90.

Phuket has many boats and with the present economy there will be deals to be found, take your time. In the mean time when you get here your welcome to join myself and Neill (the owner) on Ocean Hunter to go fishing around Racha Islands and local area.

I am always looking and if i see something i will let you know about it.

Tight lines

jay

Thanks for your replys,

Small boats seem to cost more than I though I was hoping to get something for around 200.000 Baht, Back here in NZ thats 10.000 dollars and you can pick up a great boat for that in the 16-18 foot range not new I am talking possible 10 years old.

If it all works out and I'll know before the end of the year I may see if it's possible to bring my old boat with me as house-hold goods I have a 16'6 fi-glass dominator with a 85hp out board , It's a great boat only worth about 7500 NZ dollars.

Being Thailand I thought there would be some cheap boats or at least good buys

Look forward to meeting with some of you when I get there

Graham :)

There are a few fiberglass center consoled fishing boats on the island here... 350,000 to 400,000 ish........ might be a bit hard pushed to find one for less than that... but with the economy the way it is, you might catch someone that really needs to sell quick.. and cheep..... good luck

Thai Helmsman (2nd Class - valid for vessels from 1 to 30 tonnes), 5500 baht. Simple to get, go to the Marine 5 Office at Phuket Port, with copy (and original) of passport/visa, copy of Temporary Residence Permit (free from Phuket Immigration Office), and completed application form. Bit of a mockery as no form of competency testing undertaken, but the important thing is the piece of paper that states that you're valid. Copy of licence as reference attached.

The Thai helmsman cert you require for boating, Do they execpt over seas cert's as I have a NZ Boatmasters cert. and vhf licence

one thing that ahs interested me is the Thai longtails I have read that some have deisel motors are these up for sale and if they are for what price?

But geting to the warm climate is top proirity and finding somewhere to live ,There must be others in Phuket with boats who would like company and share expences ie fuel ect.

You'll find out soon enough. They don't give a hoot about your NZ certificate OR vhf license.

They accept cash. And be prepared to quote the actual 5500 baht price when they tell you it's 10,000 baht.

Here are some tips based on my own experience here.

You mentioned possibly bringing your current boat as household goods. Do that if you can. There is a tax free allowance for household items up to a certain amount. Find out what that is. Paying import duty on the boat you like could be better than buying a boat. It sounds like you know the boat and that you are satisfied with it. I'm not sure that boats overall are any cheaper here. Certainly not in Phuket with all the western brand names being imported.

For price comparisons, consider this - off the shelf marine electronics in Thailand are double the price of the same item in the western world. When you question that, the Thai dealer always pleads import and VAT. Those taxes combined are 15%. Not 100%.

The point is, if you've been thinking about upgrading that vhf or sounder, etc, etc, - do it before you come here and pay the real retail price.

I have also been looking around at boat recently, there is not a great deal available in the lower price range.

It is possible to find new 18ft centre consoles made in thailand from 185000bt upwards, fully fitted out minus engine from 250000-350000 depending on manufacturer. There is also a Falang importing hulls from china, he also acts as a dealer for a couple of thai boat builders.

Do a websearch on Beebloo boat, a pattaya builder and they have a link to the phuket supplier who can also source chinese boats.

Also from Pattaya do a search for masterfisher.net they do a nice looking 18footer that I have seen and am thinking seriously about. Also another pattaya centreconsole builder. www.bakricono.com.

If you want to know any more pm me. I am now looking at new boats as of the second hand ones I saw there wasnt enough of a price saving to justify the risk of buying used.

Good luck on your search, and keep in touch. It is always good to meet up with a fellow kiwi.

Hi All,

I have a fledgling business either importing or making boats in the sizes mentioned, actually 12 - 28ft, mono-hull, tunnel hull or catamaran design. For an imported (Asian) made 17ft - 6' 8" beam boat based loosly on a B' Whaler it will be around 250k to 300k depending on exchange rates, etc - trailer and engines not included, all brand new. I can beat all of the 4 stroke prices in Thailand with well known Japanese brands and most of the 2 stroke prices also with either a Japanese brand or an American brand. The boats are well made and actually used by the police of the country of origin - if not one of the boats made by a UK/US team based in Thailand.

If anyone is interested to know more please feel free to contact me.

P.s. best fishing spots i know are :- Chew Lan reservoir - Surat Thani and the Andamans, a bit far offshore tho!

Hey Captnhoy

i'm interested in getting a traditional wooden squid boat, medium size, either long tail or prefer small inboard. Any tips on finding one, costs, construction issues to look out for, etc? Would consider a second hand one, but without some insider knowledge I would likely end up getting the most worm eaten wreck for double the price.

just something to take the kids out on quiet days, out of hua hin.

(like the idea of a live aboard trawler though)

cheers jeff.

Hi there big fun , you say you are building also importing boats from C hina . I,m looking for a boat in the range of 23 ft, more of a fishing boat than a speed boat with a planning hull .Do you have any pitures and prices of boats your either importing or making .

Can you give me a price guide of some of the 4 stroke engines you are also importing , around the 130 140 hp ,

Look forward to hearing from you soon , many thanks George

I would recommend importing your boat for NZ. Import duty is 7% on boats. However trailers are imported at a riduclous rate, so avoid the trailer if you can. There is a trailer manufacturer near the airport that could probably produce a quality trailer for your boat for less than the import duty on it.

I am importing an 8 meter power cat from the states, and have learned the costs on the trailer import through my own experiences. Even though prices in Phuket may be a bit depressed now, it seems that the financial crisis has created better "boat deals" in the western economies than can presently be found in Thailand.

If the boat and trailer are less than 7 feet 8 inches wide, it can be put in a container and shipped fairly affordably. If on its own trailer you wil have to check the RORO prices out of NZ.

My Boat should arrive in Laem Chabang end of July.

Where will you be keeping it? I found a secure storage for trailered boats in Samui for about 2000 baht/month.

Steve
