Perfect way to kill even more tourism and investors.

I wonder would be Pattaya be without all the "bad" bars? a nice empty space in Thailand?! LOL

PS. 99% of the bars in Pattaya have foreigners owners or so called backers

Pattaya ...perfect place for a family holiday..........

there are places in this lovely country where you dont have to experience the delights of that place.

I suppose it just depends what you are looking for........

All interpol needs to do is start talking on Howard's or Neil's TV channel with pictures and rewards of the folks wanted. They would be flushed out in about 35 minutes. Just a reward of 100k baht would do the trick. Set up a hotline, pass the names to the borders and watch those wanted scurry from the shadows. :D

And then put an "X" over their wanted picture when caught. :D

is this a joke ? "It is suspected that many of these rendezvous are sexually related, police said."

Good one. I walked through the streets of Pattaya one evening and right next to the Starbucks side of Central World and the beach I discovered there is a police station. There at about 8 or 9 pm, police are standing outside directly across from the beach where girls are soliciting customers, as well as surrounded by sex bars that are obviously that and that alone -- large windows with strip poles and girls running out and groping you in the street. It is utterly impossible for police not to know that these are foreign-funded sex bars, especially with all the American and other memorabilia of classic cars, baseball photos, etc. This whole thing is absurd, an absolute facade. Statistics are that Pattaya runs the largest prostitution business in the world, and is number 2 for child pornography, after Phnom Penh. There near the Starbucks, I saw a young girl, perhaps 6 or 7, dressed in the same garb as the pole dancers, soliciting grown men as customers, rubbing against them as they were sitting, and when I looked over I saw that the police were right there, knowing and accepting it all. And the reason? Almost all of the kids there are Cambodian, Burmese or Laotian. I felt absolutely helpless to do anything.

"Where did the money come from? Who is behind it? Where does the money go?" asked one policechief rhetorically.

It comes from sex tourists. Foreigners and big business Thais are behind it. The money goes to them, to the police, to the government workers -- to anyone and everyone who issues licenses, who enforces law, who regulates law -- Thais don't want to be reminded of their shame. My wife is Issan, and as we walked through the streets, she literally wept and wept as she heard the sounds of her native tongue coming from every side. The sight was unbelievable for her, she never knew anything like that existed in Thailand to that level -- Thais like to believe they are modest and that it is Americans and other foreigners who are the "free sex" purveyors, but anyone who's walked through Walking Street knows it is the backside of hel_l.

Statistics also show that there are more foreigners than Thais in Pattaya. It is estimated that ninety percent of the prostitutes in Thailand are from the Issan region. It is exploitation of the third world through a vulnerability of poverty.

A friend of mine had a face-to-face chat with a foreigner who owns a sex bar in Pattaya. At one point he asked him, point blank, "come on, man, don't you know this is wrong? These are girls with families and you're using them and helping people ruin their lives. You've got to know it's wrong."

The guy's response: "what do you care? I've got to take care of my family." This is the response so typical to anyone who is so corrupted and twisted that they can no longer feel anything but what they desire for themselves.

Sources close to police leaked this to the press. I read that as a press release from the police masquerading as privvy information when in fact it is good PR for the police and a very common tactic in Thailand done every year or two in various forms to dissuade the public's fears about the statistical facts they don't want to know.

Dude, you are saying the bar owners take advantage of the poor issan girls, I think the poor issaan girls are pretty good at taking advantage of the falangs. Also, let just assume all the bars closed who is really going to get hurt, the bar owners? dont think so they will go to another country and own another business. It would be the girls, where are they going to go? Where are they going to work? Maybe in a factory if they can find a job and make what 4000 possibly 6000 baht per month. In most cases nobody is forcing them to do this job, like i said in most cases. I have known girls that are smart know exactly what they want and have a plan. Go work in a bar, save every baht they can, build a house get some money in the bank or enough to start a small bussiness back home and then get out. Some get lucky and find a husband / boyfriend to take care of them, some get 3-4 boyfriends and making more than some of the bar owners. think about it... Im not saying it's right, but it is helping allot of girls and their families to get out of poverty. Can they do other type of work...maybe some of them the others would be just getting by. again Im not saying it's right, but I would not blame the bar owners. No I dont own a bar...

I can just imagine the outrage if the government announced plans (it would never happen, of course) to provide every boy/girl from Issan a free university education. Of course, even with that education, the chances of earning much more than 20,000-25,000 baht for most graduates isn't that high, but most would consider it perhaps a better option.

I think a lot of it depends on whether the girls have a choice whether to go on a bar fine or not...if she has no choice and she's fined/penalized for turning down a customer and potential profits for the bar, I do have a problem specifically with that.

There's also the option for a girl to work in a place (I live in Bangsaen, very different from Pattaya) where she just dances as a coyote and makes 18-32,000 baht or so from her ladies' drinks, tips, plus her salary and her split (w/ mamasan) of the 400 baht per 40 minutes they charge for girls to sit at the tables with the men. AT LEAST, while it's still "objectifying women," they aren't being forced to have sex and they can still make more money than MOST college graduates. Of course, the problem occurs when they have no long-term thinking, save no money and get pushed out of the business when they're in their late 20's or early 30's and they have nothing to fall back on.

I also think there's a distinction between trafficking/child prostitution and/or those terrible situations where girls have their passports taken away or confiscated, they're underaged, they're scared to death being in another country and they are basically prisoners kept under lock and key with a failed escape ending up in a terrible physical beating (just not the face, that would make them less profitable to their boss).

Opening the Interpol office in Pattaya is good news.

Plenty of criminals of all nationalities running around that Thailand could do without. Maybe the office can help with the extraditions that are pending at the moment? But no, I would guess that is a matter for the local courts.

The crackdown is just another crackdown seen on a recurring basis. The bar business has seen a few weeks of high season so it is time to share the wealth I'm afraid.

It would be interesting to know where HowardV got his stats on Pattaya being "ninety percent falang". :)

How do they know that there is 2000 people wanted by interpol in Thailand?

If they know how many then they know who they are and why are they not stopped upon entry...or is this just another number pulled out of thin air. Great job Nation on your fact finding stories.

so why can't this be part of the tourist industry and put meters on the people "suspected" of having sex? If the bar owners are not paying tax on this part of the tourist industry, maybe that should be considered. Just regulate it and charge based on quality and cleanliness. That will make it safer and encourage the skanks to clean it up a bit. Maybe it's all about the Thais just can't compete with foreign standards even in the street vending dept. We'll see gotta go, the meter's running. :)

"It is suspected that many of these rendezvous are sexually related, police said."

Capt Renault to Rick in Casablanca:

"I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!"

The Croupier to Capt Renault:

"Here are your winnings, sir."

So, all the bar girls get "secretly" paid to sit on the bar stools, on the outside of the bar, not inside the bar, serving drinks. You happen to say "hello." After you finishing talking and drinking together, you leave a "300 baht tip" and leave with the girl that you met at the bar because you have, simply, "picked up for the night." The girl "you picked up" has the night off - it's her "free time." She is not rostered on to work behind the bar until untill tomorrow night. There could be a rotation roster system in place. Problem solved for everyone.

I have read worse ideas than this! However one big problem, at least on one of those channels, is, the owner may not be so keen to host the segment.

Maybe you have none of you noticed that for the last year

there has been an army of watchers in Pattaya

from World Vision (Christian) and ICE (US customs).

as a part of operation twisted traveler.

Have you never been eyeballed by groups of mostly older white people

in teams of 2 and 3 or younger falangs with ugly Thai ladies

pretending to be married?

They were all in Cambodia and especially in Phnom Penh.

where they were successful recently in closing all of the foreign bars.

Now that they think that their mission in Cambodia is finished

they have all come here.

Obviously they hope that they can accomplish the same in Pattaya.

I think that many of those girls sitting in Pattaya Beach bars are students trying to improve their English language skills. Not really "working".

and the ones on beach road are just waiting for the baht bus

Thai mafia v's World Vision and US Customs - I know who will win. Of course, a few bars will be closed, to keep them onside, but, operations will be same same as always.

"Bar fines" are pimping fees, nothing less. These fees go to the bar owner for every time one of his

Bar girls (prostitutes) leaves to have sex with a customer. He is living off the earnings of prostitutes. Thailand has attracted thousands of these good- for- nothing farangs who would be shunned and looked down upon in their own countries. These kind of bars in turn attract the worst sort of sex tourists. All this gives a bad name to other farangs living here.

I really hope they are all deported.

Really they closed all the foreign bars in Cambodia?

My friends bar is still open there.

Also he does not have girls that work for him they are all free lance. i believe the other bars that I have gone to there also do not have bar girls working and the girls that hang out in the bars are free lance, even though they work for a mamsan. Which most of the girls are from Vietnam and sold by their parents.

Good luck to them trying to close down all the bars in Thailand...

And the Rosicrucians have got a piece of the True Cross stashed inside a go go bar. Or was that the Freemasons. I will check next week's Pattaya Mail to confirm.

It would be a much better place. Your PS should read "foreign pimp" owners. Most live off the immoral earnings of the prostitutes they employ. eg bar fines (read pimping fees)

very surpised.... that some officials finally decide to take some action.

any way, it is never too late to start the cracking down....

wonder.... how long this will last....

bravo....

This is just another attempt by the Government of Thailand to rid the country of Caucasian foreigners and replace them with Koreans, Japanese & Indians. The Government wants Western farangs to come in and spend money for three weeks or so and get the hel_l out! They don't want Westerners in this country for long periods of times. Now, the Government is trying to get more Koreans, Japanese, Chinese & Indians to enter the country & share businesses with the corrupt Thais - mostly Chinese control the country, especially here in Phuket - who don't want Westerners (farangs) to own anything. Perhaps farangs aren't as easy to take money from than the other Asians whose countries are more corrupt and better understand payoffs. The more farangs who take Thai wives, the more heat the male dominated Thai Government wants to get rid of the farangs.

I should do. I have lived here long enough to see Pattaya turned from a pleasant seaside resort into

a sex super market.
