Dentist Recommendation - Root Canal

Recommended Posts

I have read several posts here about dentists in the area. Bumrungrad, Dental Hospital, PIH, BKK Pattaya Hospital, etc, all come up with recommendations. I prefer to visit a local place if possible. But, I have a fairly major procedure that needs to be done. Probably removal of a root, root canal for sure, and then a crown. They don't feel an implant is a good idea due to a thin bone structure and being too close to my sinus.

I saw Dr. Aree at PIH. I really like her. She has referred me to another dentist there, Dr. Sornram, to do the surgery and the root canal.

Has anybody had some major work there? I would appreciate any comments you guys have. This will be NO FUN!!!!

If you need a root canal you need to see an endodontist...if you need oral surgery you need to see an oral surgeon.. Don't let a general practitioner talk you into do the procedures with him. The endo and oral surgeon have received special training in these specialties are are much better equipped to handle it. I have used dentalhospitalbangkok on Suk 49 in BKK and have been very happy there. I live in Pattaya and feel its worth the 2 hr trip. BTW..my father is an endodontist in the US

I disagree. Any good dentist can take care of root canal therapy plus crown. I've had a brialliant job done by my dentist late last year. The root canal therapy cost 5000 baht and was done in 3 sessions. The cost of the crown will depend on the material you choose.

Recommendation: Dr Warin Leekpai at 418/13 - 14 Central Pattaya Road. It's a Zahnarzt clinic on the left side heading toward the beach.

He speaks perfect English and doesn't mind explaining every detail of what he does. He's very busy and you'll need to book ahead a week or so for your first appointment.

I had dental work done at both Pattaya International Hospital and Bangkok Pattaya Hospital. In my opinion the quality of the work done at

Bangkok Pattaya is quite superior and worth the extra cost. I had two root canals done at Bangkok Pattaya by a female Endodontist, a root

canal specialist. She had an amazingly gentle touch and demeanor. She even hummed musical tunes while she worked. I cannot remember

her name; but, if you inquire at the reception desk in the Dental Department (clinic) I am certain they will steer you in the right direction.

Many fear the root canal procedure; but, trust me, it is very tolerable with the lady Endodotist at Bangkok Pattaya. The fear was the worst part.

Both of my experiences were practically painless.

For general dentistry and making of crowns, I found Dr. Thappasit at Bangkok Pattaya Hospital to be the finest dentist (? oral surgeon) I had ever

encountered. He attended Colombia Univeristy and Georgetown Dental School in the United States. He is a remarkably intelligent gentleman and

a superb human being. Dr Thappasit has a keen sense of humor as well.

I meant to add the following to my previous post:

My wife and I lived in Bangkok for several years prior to moving to East Pattaya. We both had dental work done at Bumrungrad and later

The Dental Hospital.

We both agree that we were much happier with the dental work done at Bangkok Pattaya Hospital. We used to discuss the apparent higher

pricing levels at Bangkok Pattayta; but, now that we reside in the U.S., we both realize what a bargain such quality work is in Thailand and

especially at Bangkok Pattaya Hospital. Dr. Thappasit is dearly missed.

I would like to add that I had one implant done in Thailand. For that I went to PhyaThai in SriRacha as the lady impantologist that did my

implant offered to do it for 40,000. Baht (in 2009) ... 75,000. Baht at Bangkok Pattatya! I am also very satisfied with the implant at

PhyaThai. I have several friends in the Pattaya area who also had very good results with implants at PhtaThai in SriRacha.

Ok...well, here is my problem. It is not just a root canal. I am no expert here, but from what I understand each tooth has 3 roots. I had an implant done a few years ago that required some bone grafting. While waiting for the implant, the gum receded a bit. Including around the tooth behind it. So now, part of the root is exposed. And it has developed a cavity.

Dr Aree has recommended to take out just that root and use the remaining two for a crown. I won't have full use of the tooth, but according to her and her other expert there, an implant is not an option due to the small amount of bone structure and it being too close to the sinus.

So this is not an ordinary root canal. And therefore, not sure it can be done by an ordinary dentist. I like Dr Aree and the other Dr that is doing the root canal, but their degrees are from Khon Kaen and the other from Songkla. I would much prefer one trained in the US, or at least at one of the major universities in Bangkok.

Thoughts????

Sornram is good... speaking from personal experience.

His manner a bit gay though, but don't let that put you off...

I still think dentalhospitalbangkok would be a good choice. They have a full staff of specialists that ought to be able to get you sorted out. I have a dentist there that just does fillings and when I needed an onlay they offered me a prostodontist who put in a gold onlay and did a great job. I have been to BPH and my experiences were not good. I know alot of people who go to Dr. Tapasit there and like him. But he is a crown/bridge dentist I believe.

do you really need that tooth

just a thought here but if it's at the back you may never miss it and an extraction is only 500bht (root canal 1500bht)

I'm always amazed at the inflated prices westerners pay for dental work out here.

(and think they have a bargain)

Thanks for the replies. This is a big deal for me. NO FUN.

Problem is, once you don't have a tooth, your gum recedes and your start to have bone loss. It effects all the surrounding teeth...as has happened to me already. So, need to get this done right, or I might have to write off the entire back lot! And I do love my hard tacos and tortilla chips!

Craig,

You are 100% correct about trying to save the tooth. As I mentioned before I grew up with a father who dedicated his working life to saving teeth and as an endodontist that was his calling. People have a tendancy to "just pull it" when there are other options available. BTW..my Dad is now 91 and still has all his original teeth...I just found that out the other day in casual conversation with him and was impressed.

OK...here's what happened today. Went to the Dental Hospital. Really nice place, run very well. I saw a dentist who did an initial eval. Saw nothing wrong, even though I laid everything out. Took xrays. Then referred me to the Endodontist. She checked everything out and said all was good, but I did have an issue with my gums. So was referred to the Periodontist. She initially saw nothing wrong until I repeated I did have some pain high up on the tooth, near the gum line.

She poked until I dang near screamed. Hit the spot right on. Sure enough, a cavity just barely above the gum line and on the root. Called in the Endo and they talked for a few minutes then poked me again until I started sweating. They then said I had a problem and the tooth needed to be removed. No way to just take out one root as it seems the bad one had fused with another. And they are not 100% sure if I can have an implant. My sinus cavity seems to dip right about there and the bone is not very thick.

So, I have to say thumbs up for Dr. Aree. She picked up on this right way. But her desire to just cut out the root disagrees with what they are saying in Bangkok! I think I will go with Dr. Aree. Worse case...I'm out a few bucks in the long run, but might be able to save the tooth for 5 or 6 years. Worth it to me.

I hate it when the doc says, "Oh oh, there seems to be a problem..."

Hi Craig,

So how did the dental work at PIH go?

Would love to know because I'm going to need a bunch of work done and am looking for somewhere good that does it all.... with minimal pain! I had an experience with a dentist here in pattaya a few mths back with lots of waiting around, lots of pain, on a tooth that i had no problems with before going in, and ever since i can't put any bite presure on it without a lot of pain! So I have to get that fixed and a the original problem i went in for(apparently maybe an implant) and a molar just split! :-(

Also, what are the fees like there?

cheers

Well, they ended up having to pull the tooth. Consultation among many dentists and the final word was too pull. No pain...the numbed me up good.

PIH has a great dentist for implants. Only comes in once a week from Bangkok, and is UK trained. Fantastic guy...but busy.

Prices are a bit more than you would see at smaller clinics, but not too bad. Cheaper than BPH. Overall, still happy with them. And what I like is the diversity. Several specialists there for help with what ails ya!

Bangkok Dental Hospital was pretty darn good also...but a bit more pricey.

Has anyone used Dr Tapasit in his new surgery? I recommended him to a friend, as I used to always use him at BPH, and he was a bit shocked at his quote for a crown.

Had a root canal and crown done at BPH about 2 years ago, close to 30K & about 5 or 6 visits. Service very professional.

30,000 baht for one root canal and one crown? Ouch!

I've used dentist Kittipoi on Pattaya Tai, opposite Tukcom, since someone here recommended them years ago. It's a sister-brother team running the shop and the sister is excellent: gentle yet quick and efficient. I used the brother once she was unavailable and he was a bit on the rough side for me. Had a root canal done there earlier this year for 2,500 baht (3 or 4 visits) and two (porcelain) crowns at 5,000 each. Excellent work and highly recommended.

WOW - what a difference in price!! i only ever go to BPH for any medical issues, not really bothered about price coz can claim it back through company medical coverage, only 80% for dental tho.

JH

Yes, 1 root canal & 1 crown.
