Where To Buy Art Supplies?

Does anybody know a shop for art supplies in Chiang Mai? I know they have some basic stuff in B2S in Airport Plaza. But hope there is another shop that is more specialised. Looking for acrylic paint and canvas in various sizes.

Rathawithi Rd. near un Irish pub look for big painters palatte sign, red bricks. They have liquitex acrylics and also many types of localy made, (some have low pigment to media ratios, beware). Lots of prestretched canvases.

There's an art supply shop on Sirimankalajan that sells all kinds of brushes and paints, including acrylics. Not sure about canvases as I haven't looked too closely but I assume they would have some? The shop is also a post office agent which is why I've been there, but haven't bought the art supplies :-)

Even Google Maps can't help me to figure out where Sirimankalajan is. Some directions when i'm coming from the road to Hang Dong, near Tesco.

If you are travelling westbound (towards the mountain) it is approximately halfway from the west side of the moat and Nimmenhaeman Road. You can reach it either through turning left at the first traffic light after Kad Sawn Kaew on Huay Kaew Road or turning right from Suthep Road to Sirirankalajan Road .

Lots of shops around. A good one is on the road that is behind CMIS on the north side of the street. Keo Narawat Rd.

I agree with the UN Irish pub one. Decent enough selection.

Ive never seen one up Sirimankalajarn way. I live around there. Would be interested to know exactly where it is as i drive around a lot, but havent seen any Art Shop.

if you go 750 yards up to to moonmuang road you will find a small shop called ... artist colors

next door to the mr mecanic rental place near ... the cafe

Sorry to pull up an old topic now... But where EXACTLY is this place On Kaew Narawat RD? Right After Prince Royal College? Across from McCormick? On the side of the street going East to Doi Saket or going West Into town?

I can identify with that. It is one of the reasons why I have my own "special" models.

I didn't realize you were also an artist, eek. That explains a few things. I paint with watercolors and when I'm in Thailand I always have trouble finding good paper in the pre-stretched block form... such as done by Arches. Without stretching, all paper buckles after it is wet and then dries. I usually just bring my paper from Canada when I come. Unfortunately, paper is heavy and makes up most of the weight of my luggage but I feel naked without having something to work on. Brushes and paint I can easily find in Thailand.

I'm more looking for drawing and inking supplies. Although now you mention watercolors... its been years since I painted, and I'm lacking hobbies here in Thailand. lol

Water colour paper is easy to stretch, and its worth it. I guess you already know, but for those who dont, just take a spray bottle of water, a board, and gummed tape (the kind you make wet to make it stick). Dampen the paper with the spray, then smooth down and stick it to the board with the tape. In this weather will dry fast too. Actually, just googled and a much better guide is here

Ian, I have been an artist all my life. Later on I declared that to the world through a piece of paper...a Fine Art Degree with honours. Worked as an Art tutor for years after that, taking on commissions and having a few exhibitions. But this last 4-5 years i have been working in computer graphics, mainly 3d.

My problem in Thailand was find the wooden boards to tape the paper to. I have stretcher boards at home in Canada.

I do some sketching and if I come up with something I like I do it over again with watercolours. A few years ago I did one of a Thai lady and her niece she was close to. Kung and I were leaving on a 2 week trip and the niece was sad we were leaving.

I could have sold the painting a few times but I have an emotional attachment to it.

I thought Kaew Narawat was the next street north? Sorry. Anyways it's one street north of the Chiang Rai Rd. I think it's called Rattanakosin Rd. If you go up the river and take a right it is down about 50 meters on the right.

As its been kicked up already I might as well post our findings.

We've seen 2 shops near CMU, but not really what the GF was looking for and another one was closed. Couldn't find the ones that I can see clearly now on the posted pics (thnx Dave2). We happen to come across a shop that has a large selection of paints and frames. Folow Moon Muang Road past Tha Phae Gate all the way till the end and go round the corner (after 3 years still no idea what the name of that road is LOL). And after about 300 meter on the left side, there is a shop not looking special at all,kinda like a standard Chinese stationary shop. They told us that most shops around CMU actually buy their paint with them. The GF was rather pleased with the selection of frames and paints, but they didn't have all the exact colours she needed from the exact brand that she wanted. But that happens on a daily basis, as the world is not ready for her yet.
