webfact
PM asks Thaksin whether he would do away with his Thai citizenship BANGKOK (NNT) -- Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Friday has questioned self-exiled ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra whether he would renounce his Thai citizenship and become a full Montenegrin. Speaking upon the government’s attempt to extradite Mr Thaksin for a trial on terrorism charges in Thailand, the Prime Minister stated if Mr Thaksin refused to face court trial by referring to his active Montenegrin citizenship then he would like to ask whether Mr Thaksin would renounce his Thai citizenship. The trial, however, will continue based on the rule of law regardless of Mr Thaksin’s nationality. Following Mr Thaksin’s fear of assassination attempt upon his return to Thailand, Mr Abhisit stressed that the government has no intention to execute Mr Thaksin, only to proceed with normal trial for his wrongdoings. Asked if a cabinet reshuffle is possible after the censure debate, Mr Abhisit stated he would discuss with the coalition afterward whether the reshuffle is necessary. He also confirmed that Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya would definitely remain in his position as his overall job performance was impressive. The Prime Minister added that the upcoming censure debate would be a good opportunity for him to confirm his sincerity in serving the country and to clarify the government operations in response to the video clips being taped during the clashes between government forces and the anti-government protesters. -- NNT 2010-05-28 [newsfooter][/newsfooter]
