Where To Buy Big Screen Tv

I have lived in Thailand for many years. The past five years in Pattaya. I buy most items here and make occasional drives to Bangkok for shopping. I finally decided to go all out and buy a flat screen tv. These items are not inexpensive in Thailand or anywhere else. They are heavely discounted in America. I went shopping here in Pattaya and gave up. No dealer or store in this town will offer a reasonable discount on such items. Most stores here offer no discount. I expect to pay more than American prices for such things here, but not double the price. Any suggestions on shopping areas in Bangkok where they discount such items? Any specific dealer reccomendations?

You might want to try the top floor of Robinson dept store on Ratchada, near carefour. I remember seeing them for sale at about 50k baht for a 50 inch version, not sure if this is cheap compared to the us but it is if you look at the prices in the uk

sale at about 50k baht for a 50 inch version,

What was that a cardboard model? I had a catalogue given to me recently and for a 36" wall mounted flat plasma TV it was about 300,000. I have a 60" freestanding, normal rear projection TV which I picked up new from Toshiba in Surin for 98,000. The list price is 250.000 for that model, but they had it in the shop for three years and wanted rid of it, and as I have filled three houses and two shops from there, I got a real bargain.

In Home Pro (Seri-Centre, Bangkok) they have got some relatively cheap and pretty good looking 42" plasma TVs for 80,000 - 100,000.  I believe they are LG and Samsung models.

Ahh so i wasnt far away then lampshade :o

Seems everyone here assumes when you say 'flat screen' you mean Plasma but technically incorrect in that there are flat screen CRTs, projection screen, LCD etc.

The only issue (besides price) of plasma screen is that they are all 16:9 format and 99% of all videos (CDs, etc) plus the same percentage of cable movies are in 4:3 conventional screen format. I saw a plasma on demo displaying standard 4:3 signal and it really looked bad, all squashed up.

I bought a 60 inch Toshiba in Buriram at weemart, They wanted 110,000 baht for it, in the end they got a thai guy on the phone, the manager, he said if i pay cash today, been a sunday he would do it for 85,000 baht, which was a real bargain, he knocked 25,000 baht off, brilliant, this was an ex display model been there for about 7 months.

First day they brought this to the house, i connected the DVD, so now go's looking for a DVD to try it out, go's in my sister in laws room, she is 43 and never had a guy, found a DVD with kids cartoon on the sleeve, stuck it in the DVD player, and it shocked the ###### out of me,

MY SISTER IN LAW HAD EXTREME PORN, so i stuck it back in her room and nothing said, looking at her you would think butter would not melt in her mouth,

Just shows you everything on Thai Visa is chalk & cheese, from Englands cricketers to Members girlfriends visas. It's like every bull table in every pub in the world. The maddening thing is probably everyones right.

Check out www.shop4thai.com

The cheapest at the mo is a 35" J.V.C. at ฿159,901 & the dearest is a Samsung 63"at ฿877,400ใ

Thaicoon looks like you got the same deal as me. Just checked the 60" is still reccommended retail at around 250,000. Nice one cyril.

Thanks for all the response and helpful suggestions. I have found one Samsung plasma 42" display model (old version) on sale at 99,000 Baht reduced from 159,000. It's been on display in the store and operating for about eight months. Not good when you consider that plasma deteriorates with age. I have pretty much decided on the new Sony LCD rear projection WEGA unit, but it is too new for any local dealer to discount more than 5,000 Baht. The Asian version also comes without the digital input for the new HD DVD format which is widely sold in the U.S. now. Why they left that off our Asian version of the same set sold in America with this feature I can't imagine? The street price of this set is 40% lower in America? Is our government here heaping on the import tax again?

These usually have ajustments that allow you to see the picture in its correct dimensions. I use a projector that allows 3 different modes to watch 4:3 pictures in the correct dimensions.

The first just puts 2 black bars on each side. one other mode trims some of the picture from the top and bottom. The third mode is a compromise between the other two modes. Depending on what you are watching, determines which is the best mode to use.

Most of my viewing is DVD wide screen format, so I almost never use any of these modes anyway.

I am afraid you have learned an important caveat of Thailand. One naturally thinks of Thailand as being cheap and so shopping should be cheap too. This may be true for locally made goods, but imported goods are typically marked up tremendously in Thailand. Doesn't matter if you are talking perfume, sofa's, or digital cameras. The other bad thing is you may not find state of the art; only stuff that is back a generation. There are signs that these area may be improving, but 100% markups are still common, especially at the high end.

I recently bought :

http://www.sinsiamelectronics.com/Image/pi...dp-435hdgb.html

It is a high defintion plasma panel. When running a dvd into the HDMI input, the image incredibly clear, sharp and precise.Best 43 inch on the market. Also great for using your PC....1024x768 XGA, very crisp.I can sit on my sofa 12 feet away and read the screen perfectly.I also connect my home pc to it use DVI rather than VGA input, all digital path, no lossy A/D converions. WMV HD and DVI HD movies are great aswell !!! Component, s-video and composite input sources are also accepted, but as this plasma is designed for hi def digital input, these sources wont be as sharp as 720p/1080i dvi or hdmi input sources.

I've heard (and seen posted on this forum) comments that plasma screens deteriorate over time... :o

How much time?

What kind of deterioration?

Are there mitigating conditions that can accelerate or decelerate this deterioration?
