Lena House on the way to Mae Sai, Route 1 past Mae Fah Luang University on the Right - Tasty Pizza and Great English Style Pie's

Stopped off at this place yesterday on the way back from Mae Sai.

The lasagne and fish and chips were really good.

Well run by Lena and her Aussie husband Clayton.

Ordered some frozen pies as well.

Tried (steak) one today and it was superb.

I high recommend this place.

Best chicken rice would be Lipbom to us who moved to the new shop off Dan 5.

At the Po Koon there is 1 of the best roast duck n bbq pork.

Of coz, 1 should never miss the wonton noodle at the golden clock tower, they got a new satay stand outside lately ;>

When Farang start topic "Good Restaurants inCR", what they mean is we came all the way around the world and didn't realize that Thais eat basically the same thing every meal and we're hungry for an overpriced, inferior version of the slop we eat back home.

Have you EVER ate European food in Asia and remarked, "Blimey, this tastes better than back home"?

Not. Gonna. Happen.

For any of you Dancing Shrimp fans out there be aware that it is closed now and looks as if it is undergoing a pretty big renovation that may well take a while. For those who don't know DS it is located on one of the lakes below wat doi Kwai and is a very popular local Thai restaurant.

Anyone know a good place to get an English or American style breakfast? Bacon, eggs, potato, bread, coffee, or something like that. I used to go to the Old Dutch and get their big breakfast but sadly that is gone and I just can't find anything good to replace it with.

Also I eat at Aye's a fair amount and I really do like it. Is there anything else like that style and quality around in CR?

I would also like to let you all know about what I find to be the best Khao Soi Gai place in Chiang Rai. At the White temple in one of the coffee/noddle shops called Ma Pimporn they have the best stuff ever for about 40 Baht. I normally get two of them. The name of the restaurant is in silver letters and in Thai only.

Nothing to do with the market I don't think.

I read somewhere that the owners are holidaying and

the place will be back open on May 3.

I think that is the case (not sure on the date, but in May). One of the owners is a teacher at one of the schools here. Closed down for holiday. I'm shocked that this makes financial sense for them as the rent in that area must be high. Anyway once they reopen it is worth checking out, they make some of the best Pizza in CR.

Correct, both owners on holiday and opened again today, definitely the best pizza in Chiang Rai and the rest of the menu is good too.

People wondering where the Chiang Rai Deli went are advised they have moved out onto Honglee Road, about 3 kms from the route 1211 traffic lights, on the right.

Watch for the banner, open 1pm to 7pm Mon-Fri.

Plenty of parking now.

I found another place I like: It's name has the word 'salad' ...like 'Salad Place' or 'Salad House.' I get fish & chips there - large portion for Bt.150. probably lots of other good things on offer there.

It's spacious, quiet, cool, and friendly staff. the bathrooms are decent also.

located near the NW corner of the old prison (which has been turned in to a park.). It's a few doors east of a music store. I'm not good on road names, but here's another way to find it: go north from Siam Commercial bank, 30 meters to the corner. Take a right. It's 50 meters on left.

There is a place just north of Doi Chaang about 2 block called something like "Curry Hut". They have some Indian food on Wednesdays, not bad at all.

Can you give more directions on how to find it? I like Indian, and am surprised there is no Indian restaurant in C.Rai that I know of. There have been a couple of attempts, but they faded away - one was trying to be too upscale, and only lasted a few months. I particularly like the type of places which give a cafeteria-type compartmentalized plate with several small samples. There's one in Banglampu, Bangkok, but a bit far to commute. In a similar vein, there's a place in Mae Sai which is run by a Nepali family. It's about 500 meters from the bridge, down a side road on the east side of the main road - about 100 meters on the left (sorry, I don't have street names). Outside billboard mentions all types of food, but the actual menu is rather limited in choices.

Some may recall, years ago, a Welshman opened a small restaurant downtown, Tapas, near Edison's south entrance. He had excellent English breakfasts (and was a fine fellow also), but I think he clashed with his Thai wife and she booted him out. Where can a guy get a breakfast with eggs, potatoes, real bread, maybe some meat and some beans, ....and a boiled tomato? There are places in town which purport to serve American or British breakfasts, but they fall short - for my tastes, anyway.

The only place which I've found which can fry an egg is Mon at Chian guest house. Every other venue in and around town overcooks the egg while slathering it in oil - and sometimes MSG, salt, pepper, fish sauce added. I sometimes wonder if a Thai person knows what a cooked egg tastes like - because when Thais cook something, they disguise the taste so thoroughly.

I was traveling with friends in the region last week, and when eating in a couple of restaurants were asked the "hot, medium or mild" question.

In both cases the food was good but the medium was mild and the hot less spicy than the medium in the first establishment.

I was wondering if the local nosh shops reduce the chili automatically for farangs, the only experience I can recall that reduced me to a tearful nose running wreck was a place out near the old airport that seemed to be full of students.

That was a few years back and I no longer seem to be able to find the place.

Went to Le Meridien today, the price has gone up about 100B but the menu expanded to include oysters and Alaskan King crab.

Still a good lunch, regulars should get the Starwood hotels membership card giving you not only a discount on the meal but every tenth one is on the house.
