Gouda, Pumpernickel, Rolmops And Bicycles

For your information:

Besides good old 'Northern Farm' Chiang Rai has been enriched with another place aiming at the palate of the foreigner.

Gouda cheese will sound familiar, but does 'Pumpernickel' do? Or 'rolmops'?

For some of us it does and that might be the explanation of the fact that an increasing number of foreigners know to find the way to 'Hamburger No 1".

The wife of Belgian Jos is running a tiny restaurant and shop, which is one of the expat meeting places around Chiang Rai town. Especially on Sundays, when the fresh bread has arrived. A good atmosphere and this in the middle of nowhere.

Opposite Hamburger No 1 is a very good car wash (100 Baht inside/outside).

A good combination.

Where?

Take the super-highway to the north and take, immediatly after Ban Du market, the first street to the left,. If you miss the first one, you take the second one, about sixty meters further and take to the left where the two streets meet.

Next to the entry of Sinthanee 5, at the local 'klong'.

Jos is one of the bicycle specialists in town (he climbed Doi Tung -14 kms- in 55 minutes where I needed 14 minutes downhill). He can give you the information you might need.

PS. Pumpernickel is the typical German black wholemeal bread. It's 'lethal', when it comes in the wrong hands. Rolmops is a pickled herring around a gherkin. Not innocent either.

:o Have had the great pleasure of eating at Hamburgar #1 in Bandu Meung and the food is great! Joseph and Shirley serve up a good western and european venue and are always polite and helpful to new arrival farang to Chiangrai. Joseph has a very good working knowledge of the area and is very helpful and honest!

It's nice to go there on Sundays as you can meet other expacts in the area and enjoy good home cooking at very cheap prices!

Thumbs up to Joseph and Shirley wish there were more people like them in Thailand

..... ah well it only cost me 999baht in Makro, Mr. Tayto informed us about his wrecked bicycle.

Mr. Tayto, are you aware of the fact that you could have bought a nice bicycle helmet for 999 Baht? That's what you should have done. Then you would have at least a nice bicycle helmet now.

Now you have nothing!

..... Anybody know where I can get a reasonable bike?.............cheap , mind you, a teachers salary does'nt go far these days.

So don't teachers :D

There are three good bicycle shops in Chiang Rai. The number one, Northern Bike, where Jozef speaks about, is at the super-highway exactly opposite one of the last U-turns before Ban Du. International top gear! This is where you can rent a new bike for 200 Baht if you join killer-biker Jozef next Saturday 28 August.

The number two is Fat Free at the crossing in the middle of town, opposite the First Church. Owned by Khun Chompoo and Khun Bert. Very pleasant people and great service. Also there you can rent (from 50 to 500 Baht, depending on the material).

They have a big choice and have second hand bikes as well. Not expensive and good.

The third one is on the main east-west street, the Tannalai road. Next to the Thai Military Bank, on the ground floor of the old teakwood Paw Wattana Hotel (former hotel, not anymore). Khun Kat if I remember his name right. He has his repair shop there and there are always some old motorbikes, Vespa's and vintage bicycles standing outside. Good work and very cheap.

Fifty meter further he has a small shop for selling bicycles. A lot of second hand of good quality.

.....The local somtam lady told me Limbo was also quitting....any truth in it, Limbo? :D

Don't believe her! You want me to up in weight as well? I am already 82 :o

My dear friend Limbo, after the Nagahill episode I hope that you can look back at this posting of yours and see the blatant advertising of your friend/cycling buddy Josef`s bar restaraunt.

This is now probably the least kept secret in Chiang Rai.

Cheers from your old drinking buddy,Chang35baht :o

DO NOT FORGET    sunday 16 oktober 9 a.m. DOI THUNG bicycle event  everybody  is welkom    see you all

Jozef,

I see i missed the Doi Thung bicycle event last week. How did it go?

I often lead a bi-weekly ride in my town....It's called the midnight mystery ride...only one person knows where it's going...the leader...so everybody sticks together...more or less... and so we take some unusual routes and bike trails through the city.

Here's a news report on it.

http://santacruz.indymedia.org/newswire/di...18109/index.php

Anyway I will be up in CR in December...any rides planned for then?

Best wishes

Jeff

:D What do you mean by that ? Limbo.

You mean, if you throw the bread at somebody's head, he is propably dead ? I guess so ... But why would a sour herring with gherkin not be innocent ? :o

Concerning the Pumpernickel you hit the nail on the head!

The sour herring is more like an undercover agent. It works from the inside :D !
