Help If I Come To Thailand

Im a girl called clare from england but i want to emigrate to Bangkok by visa runs. If i decide to live in Bangkok, Ill be on my own and I cant speak Thai, so Ill want someone English speaking to show me around and to help me if i get into trouble there.

Id especially like to contact other young English speaking people aged from their early teens to their early twenties before I come because Im useless making new friends, and I dont drink or go to bars.

Or is there somewhere else I could go to make friends?

And I also want to know the cheapest long term accommodation in bangkok that has air conditioning and its own toilet facilities. I dont really need a television or a fridge, And I can make do with a small stove from a camping shop but Ill want a bed in it.

And where in Bangkok can i pre-order books and dvds in English? Im worried that might be a problem in Thailand.

And I dont know anything about medical insurance, how do I get it, which is the cheapest and should I buy it before I leave the uk if I *do* come?

I see you have your priorities in order english dvd before finding a job. Come for a short visit first see how you like it, you may change your mind. O, by the way what sort of visa to you plan obtaining for living in Thailand.

Hes probably already got a visa, and has had for many years, don't worry about it too much. smile.gif

Clare = Old Farang, already a member of ThaiVisa.

Most women on anonymous internet forums and in internet chatrooms are in fact men pretending to be women. biggrin.gif

Is this some kind of wierd initiation for a new member? Ive never posted here before today. And who is Old Farang, are you saying im someone called Old Farang or saying im an old non-Thai? I dont mind I just dont get it.

Im planning on obtaining a visa with a TEFL course, or a course in Thai language that Ive seen advertised... if I can afford it. And after that its anything not to have to come back to England I think!

Im not really a good cook no, and I dont play backgammon (its a board game?) and lol I hope I dont burn my arse!

Clare, surely you know that TV is a magnet for trolls who create fake identities just for kicks. This forum is populated mostly by older farang (read caucasian) men. There's simply not too many young farang women choosing to come to Thailand just for the love of country. It doesn't mean that you're not who you say you are. Just very unusual, that's all.

Clare, they just assumed you were on a wind up, I suppose it is like some sort of initiation  quite a lot of people seem to go through it.

I suppose it's because this site does get its fair share of trolls.

Anyway, don't worry about cooking, I doubt you'll have to, there's food everywhere. Have you been before?

have a look at this site for rooms http://en.9apartment.com/

best thing to do would be to get a hotel for a week or so then go round and have a look. I don't know Bangkok all that well myself, but I've got a couple of friends there. Don't worry too much about the 'initiation' replies you get, just keep looking round the site, there's plenty of information that you can find for yourself by looking and reading.

Good luck,

Biff

Claire, do you have some special reason to choose Bangkok for your place of residence? If not then I would suggest Chiang Mai where there is a solid base of English speaking expats of all ages. Accommodation is also much cheaper in Chiang Mai. Bangkok is a huge city and it can be confusing for a first time visitor. By contrast you can walk just about everywhere in Chiang Mai and not get lost. When you get your feet under you then that is the time to venture out to other parts of Thailand. There is lots to see everywhere.

And why would you think either of those things would be likely?

Hi I looked at the apartment site and the rates start at 2000 baht a month which is 41 pounds a month or 495 pounds a

year which is pretty cheap. Thanks! But for some reason my computer wont show the details when I click on the pictures... having air conditioning and its own toilet/shower is important to me, and I dont know if Id get that in a cheap apartment.

Hi Ive only thought of coming to Bangkok because its where I thought English is spoken the most and I dont speak Thai yet, and Ive been to Bangkok recently. And Im fussy what I eat but the ingredients I like were available at Tops Market there, and I dont know where I could buy them in Chiang Mai. Is it as easy to get a metered taxi there?

Ive only thought of moving to Bangkok before.

<br />Sorry but anyone that doesn't need a fridge is a Troll.  <img src='http://static.thaivisa.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /><br />

If I living simply I can do without a fridge because air conditioning keeps things cool enough in the room. In my hotel room it actually was 17 degrees when it was 31 degrees outside and I just kept my water and orange juice by the bed. And fresh food is best used on the same day anyway.

Oh dear do you think it might be cheaper to have a fridge in your condo or have the aircon on all day and night to chill your drinks? Evere been here to Bangkok in April when its a bit warmer?

Have you done any research at all on staying in Thailand, youv'e got a degree right???

No Ive never been to Bangkok in April so I dont know what its like, is it much worse?

And I wont want the aircon *just* to chill my drinks, I just preferred leaving it on so I found it had that effect too. So why run a fridge at the same time?

I havent got a degree, so Ill be hoping to do a TEFL while Im in Thailand.

Actually that post just is just being *deliberately* rude, imo... and paranoid.
