Car Driving Instructor

I need to train my fiancee to drive a car for when the new car arrives. At first I thought I would do it since early in my career I trained well over a thousand people in safe driving and she is normally a safe driver. I have lately heard some horror stories on training love ones, so maybe I need a back up or primary plan. Brand new car may also compromise my patience. Does anyone know of an instructor, preferably a small automatic, that might be available.

They can be reached at number 08-4803-7873 or 053-712788.

My princess got her driving license there, 3000 Baht, including ten hours

private lessons.

She is in the same boat as Scorpio's wife, getting a car soon, having a driving

license but no experience in driving.

I would like her to have more experience with driving in town, a subject that

instructors mostly neglect.

I am afraid that the old blue Jeep with on average six or seven students in the back

is the alternative that Gow-soh-naw offers (manouvring at Pattaya noi's parking place).

Don't forget to tell her about the lines that are painted on the roads. They are NOT for marking lanes, as some outsiders seem to think. They are actually fuel efficiency boosters. The government has bought special paint with magnetometers embedded in it and placed it in lines on the roadways. The magnetometers interact and communicate with the turbulator in each car engine to increase fuel efficiency. The best signal between the magnetometer and the turbulator is achieved by straddling any one of those lines. Dead center over any one of them works best.

Nothing will break up a relationship faster than teaching your GF or wife how to drive in your new car, and I am only half kidding. Especially if the new car has a manual transmission and she starts grinding your gears. i really suggest you pay someone to teach her driving and only ride with her after those few awkward first tries behind the steering wheel are over. My daughter actually punched me when she was 15 and I was trying to teach her to drive, and we barely talked to each other for a month. I hired someone in the USA to complete teaching her.

I vote for doing it yourself. I have been teaching my wife for the last two years. We are on track for her being able to drive by the time I am too old to drive myself.

We checked the prices today.

A-tech wants 4100 Baht for ten hours in a non airconditioned car (often old ones, type Opel Corsa or Ford Aspire).

The one Joel pointed out only 3500 Baht for ten hours in airconditioned cars (Honda CRV, Toyota Vios, rather new cars)

A-tech sees that you get a driving license for a good price, but is not willing to let you drive in town.

It costs them probably too much as they don't have possible damage covered. They save also a lot on gasoline

by mainly letting their students drive straight on.

Joels "Kap Rot Jon Chiang Rai" of Acharn Nonglak (08-4151-0055) seems to be not only cheaper but also better.

Your wife can choose herself where she wants to drive, if in the mountains, town, the highroad or/and on secundary roads.

There are several signs in that neighbourhood, so if your wife will find it easy.

Anyhow, for a start:

Let's say you have been reading the newspaper in the Dusit Island resort.

To get off the island you have to pass, you guessed already, a bridge.

After handing back your ticket to the guard you cross this bridge and take to the right.

After hundred meters you drive through the lane with Chiang Rai oldest trees with at your

left hand the office of the local water department.

Turn left after you passed the water department (this road brings you to the City Navel Pillar,

Hom Doi Tempel etc) and you will find the driving school after sixty meters at your right.

The school has only three or four teachers. The coming two weeks they only have time left during

the afternoons.

I vote for doing it yourself. I have been teaching my wife for the last two years. We are on track for her being able to drive by the time I am too old to drive myself.

Maybe Its not a bad Idea after all.

Get your Licence and then learn to drive at your leisure.

Its probably a good Idea to drive around the course in the 'Licencing place' when they are shut also

When I was a kid in Australia I remember my mother merely filled out a form to get her driver's licence, which qualified her to drive ANY vehicle.

There was no test, written or practical, and at that stage she had never been behind the wheel of a car.

My Dad gave her driving lessons on the back roads and us kids sat and trembled in the back while Mum crashed through the gears in the old Morris 1000.

I completely agree, never, under ANY circumstances should you teach, or otherwise instruct, your partner in ANY of even the most rudimentary requirements of driving!

Not only will the actual lessons be fraught with danger (relationship danger) but FOREVER AFTER anything that ever goes wrong for her at any time in the future regarding driving....... will be your fault

Picture this scenario, if you will.

"Hi honey, how was your day?"

"Don't you 'honey' me! I've just got a ticket because you never told me about xxxxxxx (insert random thing that shouldn't even be possible) and now you've got to fix the car! How will I get to work tomorrow?" (sound of slamming doors, things being broken in the kitchen)

My g/f has suggested that I teach her to drive a car, I must be picking up on the 'Thai' way of doing things.

I said "yes, yes, good idea" big smile coupled with thinking 'absolutely no way on this green earth will that ever happen'

I've nominated the youngest of her sisters boys for that onerous task, he can take the blame for everything that she will do in a car, for evermore. Bless him, he doesn't even know it yet!

The other day we had business at the Thoeng license and registration office. Two elderly villagers, well my age actually but they seemed old, asked to accompany us as they needed to renew their expiring drivers licenses. Both ended up failing the simple tests miserably. They waited for the lights to go all the way to the top before trying to use the other foot on the brake. They pulled the cord until it stopped. They turned their heads for the peripheral vision test and couldn't tell the difference between green, yellow and red.

Listening to their excuses on the way home, sent a chill down my spine, at their level of ignorance. They had no idea what they were supposed to do or why. You can honk your horn or flash your lights at these two and they would carry on about their business not knowing what you were on about. Seems our four legged friends in the village have more common sense when it comes to staying alive on the roads.

License or not, these two, and I hazard a guess others, will continue to drive and create a hazard on the roads. Just a gentle reminder that it is not enough to depend on the rules of the road to keep you safe. Being in the right will not save your life or the life of others. Good luck and stay safe.

Yeah , I think I've met these Guys VF. drive at 20 km/h because they can't see further than their noses. Driving too slow is just as bad as driving too fast in my opinion.

Things are changing fast though. I think 15 years ago or so. You just handed over a small fee to get your licence.

Todays Test's do appear relatively difficult .

maybe in 15 years or so, the greatest threat to our safety won't be Dogs, Chickens and various contraptions without lights.

Why does that farang stop to allow pretty Girls (and the Occasional Old Lady) to cross the road. Can't they see its bloody Dangerous.

Why does that farang Stop and wave at me as though to indicate he's giving me the right off way. Doesn't he understand I can't see him or haven't a clue what he wants !?

Why does that farang use his/Her Vanity Mirrors for spatial Awareness doesn't he/she understand they are for picking Zits or Nasal Hair ? Afterall, they certainly seem to have enough of it

Not to mention their antics at the Clock tower at the top of jetyod Road

He may have a point. My wife had extensive lessons in the UK. She was ready for the test.

She failed the test here the first time. Sailed through the second time.

She is and I suppose I could be biased. But yes, she is an excellent Driver. She doesn't have a Good Luck charm hanging from the rear View mirror either. She drives like a professional in a War Zone ;-)

If your wife will be driving outside Thailand there are obvious benefits of teaching her yourself however if she will be driving mainly in Thailand then the ONLY sensible option is for her to have local training so she can drive as badly as everybody else does and thus be as unsurprised as others are when somebody suddenly stops, puls out or turns right across their lane with no indication or consideration that the other car will need to brake to avoid hitting them etc.

Even if you send your wives to driving school, it doesn't preclude you spending long hours in the vehicle with her, early on. There simply is no substitute for hours behind the wheel and miles driven, and you will need to be their to keep her safe and out of harms way. Do you really want to delegate the safety of the one you love, to someone else? If your relationship can't withstand the rigors of learning to drive, that is something to think about. Just food for thought.

Hi, I want to do the driving test in Chiangrai too, is there any condition I need to fulfill before I sign up for any of these driving schools? like, a visa for a certain length of stay in Thailand or anything, thanks!
