WASHINGTON D.C. (BNO NEWS) – The United States Department of State on Monday announced the contract to construct a New Embassy Compound in Islamabad, Pakistan.

The contract was awarded by the department's Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) and Bureau of Administration. The contract, valued at $669 million, was given to B.L Harbert International of Birmingham, Alabama.

B.L. Harbert will be in charge of building a New Office Building, New Office Annex, Marine Security Guard Quarters, perimeter wall, support annex and general services office, and permanent housing.

The current embassy was constructed in 1972 and the new compound will provide modern facilities to accommodate a higher number of staff as well as providing enhanced security features. The new compound will be built on the current 35 acre embassy site.

The new facility will replace the old one and is expected to be a state-in-the-art platform and will be completed by 2016.

OBO has completed 72 new diplomatic facilities and has moved over 21,000 U.S. government employees to new, modern and more secure facilities in the last nine years. Currently, OBO has 33 facilities in design and construction.
