50 kg of ammonium nitrate.....that is a lot.

A big blast on the second floor.

Possibility it could be the bomb makers themselves.

Unless it was a personal thing it hardly seems likely that anyone would take enough explosives to the second floor to cause a big blast.

Anyway condolances to the familys of the dead, a speedy recovery to the injured and hope the building owner had insurance.

I'm with you,

Bomb at second floor, anybody who has it in for some person living in the building places the bomb in the basement, lot easier than carry that thing up flights of stairs.

looks more like a leaking cooking gas tank.

Remember 1-liter liquid form cooking gas (butane, Propane) when released from the container turns into 225 liter of gas form.

Furthermore it is heavier than air so it lays on the floor (ground) strike a match and you have a hel_l of an explosion.

Properties I own do not allow cooking gas, all hobs and ovens are elelctric.

And if you're mixing it with aluminium powder and diesel you need to take care.

Maybe a little carelessness has cost a couple of lives but saved dozens.

UPDATE

EXPLOSION

Powerful blast hits building in Nonthaburi, killing 3

A powerful blast rocks a five-story apartment building in Nonthaburi's Bang Bua Thong district on Monday evening, killing at least three and injuring many others.

Police claimed the explosion broke out in a room on the second floor of the Saman Mettha Apartment building at about 6am.

The explosion severely destroyed the second and first floors of the buildings.

The impact of the explosion caused panic that the building could be collapsed.

The injured people were rushed to hospitals nearby. Some of them were said to be thrown out of the building in the blast.

Owner of the building; Samarn Bunprasert, told police that he did not know who rented the room where police believed that the blast started.

The explosion happened hours after the state of emergency was extended in the province as well as Bangkok, Pathum Thani and Samut Prakarn.

Nonthaburi has been a stronghold of Pheu Thai MP Apiwan Wiriyachai who is also deputy House Speaker. Apiwan is a leading red shirt leader who took stage several times to cristicise Abhisit government during the April and May Crisis.

Matichon web said police chief Wichien has been told of theory of a bombmaker's error causing "premature" explosion. /via @tulsathit

One can only hope the theory becomes fact.

One has to be unwell or abnormal to make a comment like that.

"One can only hope the theory becomes fact."

The problems are big enough already without people seemingly enjoying their expansion.

Listen up! The explosives specialists are talking and coming even up with "urea"....:o

Urea is a fertilizer and absolutely harmless; it is as explosive and as flammable as your table salt...

Ammoniumnitrate is also a fertilizer but it also has certain explosive properties. However what people always forget is that you can't just detonate Ammoniumnitrate by accident unless you have a fire under many tens or hundreds of tons of compressed AN. It is not sensitive at all and it requires a very strong initiation by a strong blasting cap and a strong booster charge of high explosives before it can be detonated. If you are able to bring it to an explosion its strength is about 1/3 of that of military high explosives. Mixing it with Diesel yields a higher detonation temperature and a larger fireball but it doesn't increase its sensitivity - but you must know exactly what you are doing and you must mix it very thoroughly. Mixing it with aluminium powder will further increase the explosion temperature but it doesn't make it significantly stronger and it doesn't increase it's sensitivity - and there is still the requirement of a strong blasting cap and massive booster charge.

Let's not speculate about bombs and explosives and estimates of quantities of explosives before there is any evidence that it was caused by a bomb or by explosives and it can be clearly excluded that it was not a gas explosion. Remember how many houses have been destroyed worldwide by gas explosions.

Here a video of about 50kg of ammoniumnitrate initiated by a massive booster charge:

I'm not back until May, I hope I don't miss all the action.

Though this time my move should be permanent :D

I'm bored with all the action, loss of lives, destruction of livelihoods, destruction of International image.

R.I.P, the dead and a speedy recovery to the injured. Especially sad when there is child casualties.

We don't know the truth yet as to what caused it, must remember that.

Just when the authorities are having some trouble to keep justifying the State of Emergency, along comes another bomb explosion to underline how wise they are to keep it. It's lucky that the powers that be take such good care of their subjects. Otherwise the country could descend into chaos so easily.

Looks similar in damage to the bomb at the apartment building. Thanks for confirming the impact was the equivalent of 50 kilos of ammonium nitrate:

Looks like it was the reds after all - here comes the damage limitation exercise.

Interesting how TF is immediately jumping to the defence even before the bombers or victims have been ID'd.

??

What have you smoked today? Getting amused about the ignorance of people talking about "urea" is damage limitation exercise or defence?

Questioning that is was ammoniumnitrate and explaining some facts about it is now interpreted as "damage limitation exercise" or "defence".

You have got a vivid fantasy indeed.

It is futile to speculate because without evidence it could have been gas, a bomb, solvent fumes, a dust explosion, TNT, Dynamite, Nitroglycerine, RDX, C4, Semtex, Hexamethylene triperoxidediamine, Acetone peroxide, gunpowder... - you name it.

I'd go with the dust explosion. I heard that they hadn't had a cleaner in for a while.
