News_Editor Posted October 7, 2010 Share Posted October 7, 2010 Torrential rain, flash floods kill at least 28 in central Vietnam 2010-10-07 10:45:54 GMT+7 (ICT) HANOI, VIETNAM (BNO NEWS) -- At least 28 people have been killed and tens of thousands of homes have been damaged after torrential rain and flash floods in central Vietnam this week, local media reported on Thursday. VietNamNet reported that an estimated 70,000 houses had been flooded from Quang Tri to Thua Thien-Hue Province in central Vietnam as a result of the heavy rain and flash floods, leaving at least 28 people dead. Another seven people remain missing. The severe weather began on October 1st and was the result of low pressure in the region that was combined with a cold spell, resulting in heavy rainfall. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung demanded urgent measures to deal with the disaster. The Vietnamese Ministry of Health urged local health agencies from Thanh Hoa to Binh Thuan provinces to supply some 100,000 tablets of Chloramine B and 100 lifebuoys to flooded areas, VietNamNet reported. More than 900 border soldiers with 500 lifebuoys, 400 life jackets and 35 tents were mobilized to join the rescue work and search for the missing victims.
