NANJING, CHINA (BNO NEWS) -- At least 17 people were killed after a passenger bus and a cement truck collided in eastern China on Saturday morning, state-run media reported on Sunday.

The accident happened on a highway between Hefei, the capital of Anhui Province, and Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province, when a passenger coach collided with a cement tanker truck.

The accident occurred while the area was shrouded in thick fog, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency, and the collision caused the truck to catch fire before rolling off the road.

A total of 53 people were on the passenger bus, exceeding its maximum capacity of 47, officials told Xinhua. Seventeen people were killed at the scene, while 23 injured passengers were transported to area hospitals. Six of those were seriously injured.
