TAMPICO, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- At least twelve people were killed on late Monday evening during overnight armed clashes in northern Mexico, officials said.

The deadly clashes involved civilians armed with grenades and AK-47 assault weapons. The violent act took place in the Petrolera neighborhood of Tampico at around 11:00 p.m. local time. Neighbors reported that the armed confrontation took place outside a residence in the area.

Preliminary reports indicate that a group of men traveling on board several vehicles were attacked by gunfire from other individuals. The men got out of their vehicles and took refuge in a residence.

As a result, police forces found dozens of cartridges from the assault weapon and recovered ten bodies. On Tuesday morning, the bodies of a man and a woman were located a few blocks from the shooting place, tied with wire and execution-style gunshots.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the clashes as well as the identities of those involved.
