ROAD WARRIORS: 14,833 motorbikes were registered in the

province during the first eight months of 2010.

By Apinun Saitong.

PHUKET: -- There has been a nearly 600% increase in the number of new vehicle registrations being made in Phuket each month, according to the Phuket Land Transport Office (LTO).

Phuket LTO director Kanok Siripanichkorn told the Gazette that 500 to 600 automobiles are being newly registered on the island each month, compared to just 50-100 per month at the same time last year.

Around 10% of new registrations are made by foreigners and 40% are made by Thais from other provinces, he said.

While 2009 saw a total of 23,760 new vehicle registrations in Phuket, this year looks to eclipse that number. Phuket LTO statistics show that from January to August 2010 there were already 21,112 new registrations made.

These included 4,905 cars, 1,261 pickup trucks, 14,833 motorbikes and smaller numbers of other vehicles such as vans, tractors and road construction equipment.

Last year’s registrations included: 4,773 cars, 1,450 pickup trucks, and 17,371 motorbikes and other vehicles.

The number of vehicles registered in other provinces but paying tax at the Phuket LTO from January 2010 to August was 27,819. Last year’s total was 39,232 vehicles.

In the same period this year, there were 26,515 Phuket-registered vehicles taxed in other provinces; last year there were 37,153.

It would be interesting to know just how many vehicles there are actually registered in Phuket. Surely not a great mind leap for any reporter to ask whilst talking with the man who has the numbers. Add to that a percentage for out of province vehicles then extrapolate the numbers to come up with a good approximation of Phuket's actual population which I reckon to be about one million.

another indication on Phukets actual population, 50% of all vehicles sold/registered here are to out of province residents or farang. In addition most out of province residents have their vehilces registered out of province. one million residents pluss tourists seems likely

An interesting observation by a PG reader was that without a cheap and viable public transportation system, people have no alternative other than to buy a car, or motorbike to get around.

So......the tuk-tuk drivers could be responsible for all the traffic on the island

I consider the tuk tuk prices responsible for most drunk driving too. I would not consider drunk driving home from Patong if tuk tuks where available at BKK meter taxi prices
