7-Eleven Joins Thai Police In Fighting Crimes Against Foreign Tourists

Doomed to fail as it is quite an absurd idea. The staff has received special training? Well they probably did in grade 4 when they received the local commander who told them that they could get points for informing on Mom and Dad. We are talking about children in the 7 eleven who work there for a few months at the most. This is nothing more than an idea to let the Charoen Pokhand group a major yellow shirt and coup sponsor make money.

If the police was really serious about fighting crime against tourists they would dismantled the police that is harassing tourists who drop a cigarette on the pavement and take care that there are proper computers and other infrastructure to report a crime. Playing policeman is obviously in the blood of Thai pople. Mothers are already scaring their children in this police state that the police will come and get them if they do not stop crying.

Something is very wrong with a country when they go to supermarket staff to assist in crime reporting.

1. As someone already mentioned staff at 7-11 hardly speak any English

2. So a victim is to walk around from 7-11 to 7-11 trying to find which one can help?

3. Whats the kickback to 7-11?

4. What would be a response time? 24 hours?

5. What about Family Marts? why not involve them and also may be the tailors, since there is one on every corner.

Now they say staff have undergone special training, what training was that? Police does not have any training, so what did they teach the 7-11 staff? How about having the "great little helpers" the farang volunteers stay at those 7-11, since there is no shortage of them trying to get in.

I don't know what you're all b*tching about, they offer to HELP police, not take over their duties. they hire pretty good people and screen thoroughly. if you cant find police, 7 11 is a good place to check.

why all the unnecessary and untrue negative remarks? Why so many complaints? why not just go back to your homeland then?

Well, go back to your homeland..... seems to be the dud kind of answer anyone can post when they want to defend Thailand...... Geez, how to argue with that?

What are you talking about? B*tching, if that's what you call it...... isn't it criticizing? Yes, it does have a purpose. If you don't know the weaknesses, how can you forestall them or know what best action to take???

1) It's not a preventative strategy, just a reporting strategy that is only intended to divert attention, and create a good PR image for the police who have suffered in the press continually and have little esteem according to foreigners internationally - I'm generally afraid to go to them - I'd rather tell someone else l - they'll only extort money anyhow

2) It takes the responsibility from the police, only something they could be happy about on their low wages and taking up tea money time

3) staff won't be trained to speak the multitude of languages of foreign customers who visit Thailand and are victim to unnecessary crimes that the police don't prevent while they are underpaid and looking for other ways to boost their income.... pawn the problem of incompetence in language communication off to the low-class seven eleven staff for 23 baht per hour

4) What could a seven eleven staff member do? End up calling the police because an irate foreign customer is going berserk in another language in seven eleven as he's just been assaulted and a Thai certainly won't know what to do in that situation very easily

5) If no-one coming into Thailand knows about it because it is not publicized with a remedy for action, then it is useless; however, if widely publicized and standard practice in the future, it does look impressive to the mobs of tourists who aren't yet aware of the facade behind Thai politics and motive that always leads nowhere

6) Now that I've criticized it, I know it's weaknesses can only be greater than its strengths. I have learned not to believe this 'one day he said' kind of stuff that's published for PR and puts smiles on fat cats faces while they can keep ignoring the real problems like reducing real crime - that is, actions that harm others and so forth

Well... most 7-11's seem to have an abundance of staff, so maybe this could work.

TheWalkingMan

It could work only if the staff at those 7 eleven stores can understand or speak english , and so far that is hardly the case. Imagine a Russia guy who speak really little english oppose to a seven eleven staff with the same english skill .. that wouldnt be that fun !

It's not just the poor Russians. Judging by your not-too-good English you would definitely be in trouble....So don't let anybody beat you up outside 7-Eleven mate:)

I think the police are losing the plot. After basically an endless stream of bad press, they are fighting back by telling tourists to tell the ladyboys working at 7/11 about the crime that just happened to them ???

Here is a free tip. How about stopping crime in the first place, instead of a new bizarre way to report it. Instead of the police taking all their time blocking traffic so VIPs can rapidly whiz around and stopping Thais at the endless checkpoints to steal their money, they need to follow western policing. Meaning the police are cruising around everywhere looking for crime.

Somebody asked me one time if they would get stopped by the police at night. I said no, they are all at the Karaoke bars spending the money they stole that day.... :cheesy:

They need to follow Western policing eh? Hope they dont follow Chicago's example.

My link

They need to do something different but when I say need, I mean we need, they like the system.

I see police cruising around all the time btw, stoping and searching people around sukhumvit area between asoke and RCA mainly, they have stopped me around 10 times in 5 years. Usually polite, one time some took my money and cigs at a check point, I asked for it back he gave me the empty pack and my empty wallet. FKN AS**OLE, the taxi driver was non to pleased either he made me goto an atm even tho we were stopped in front of my apartment building. Mostly they are ok tho, have asked me for my passport (which I said I didn't have) but always let me go on my business after a few minutes.

I don't think I particularly look the criminal type, but I guess being in your early 20's and in Thailand its like fishing for them. My Jamaican friend gets stopped CONSTANTLY, and the police have told him its because he is black.

So I don't think you can't say they aren't out looking for crime, its just they prefer money from the criminals as opposed to solving crime.

What is especially weird, I have seen people get into trouble and police escort them to ATMs... thats kinda fked up, obviously something dodgy is happening, but of course no one notices.

Mmm...Of the 22 comments on the opening page of this topic, 19 were negative, 2 were positive and 1 was mediocre.

When my 7-11, in Chiang Dao where they do speak English, becomes a member, I'll be happy, even tho I speak Thai.

Good luck to you 19. Have a nice visit, then please leave.

How will it be advertized ? by sticking a talking, waving, man sized dummy outside 7/11 saying " report your mugging here" ? But seriously though, how many short stay tourists would know about this, and who would opt to go to a police station, just like in every other country in the world.

Never heard such nonsense !!!

I was going to post exactly the same the sentences as you bkklife.

Same thinking, did you work in advertising as well?

How would tourist even get the idea to go to 7/11 for reporting a crime. How would it be advertised. I was going to design a window sticker "report your crime here". A red logo with a knife, white border, sticker to go on the door? Probably cheaper than setting up little manned tourist police booths at the beaches and tourist areas.

Or maybe the flight air hostesses will issue a business type card, with your immigration card, detailing information such as " if you get mugged in Pattaya, report to your nearest 7/11". That would be far to easy to implement and not to mention the corruption written all over it.:bah:

Nah, the new information sheet in the hotels and airplanes

1. If you are a victim of a crime and require assistance contact Thai Royal Police on 1555

2. If you are a victim of a crime and require URGENT assistance contact Your local 7-11

3. If you have been murdered, please report to the nearest hospital for post mortal.

Except I reemember a thread on here where some member was complaining bitterly about 7/11 staff not being able to speake English, the general consensus was what do you expect from minimum wage workers, so lets assume the majoriy will not understand much when some hysreical female pops in at 2am complaqining of a bag snatch or worse. It will be about as much use as actually going to the police station and I speak from experiance.

What is it about people who put on rose colored glasses?

Yep, just pretend everything in the world is okay, and it will be, right!. Problem solved... you know.... or just leave Thailand again!

Forget the injustice, forget the lies, deception, diversion..... and keep your head in the sand. I would say it in my own country too.

No offense to you personally; it looks great from your angle!

Again, of course, just leave Thailand. Problem solved! You see, it's not that people don't appreciate the wonderful things Thailand has to offer..... isn't it just that some people are tired of being deceived, lied to, flaked for their money that keeps their families alive..... !!!

Of course, put on your rose glasses and forget the poor guy at the bottom of the ladder who gets shat on continuously by society. Of course, that'll never be you, so don't stress.

Then I won't write for you, just for the voice of the little Thai guy, like the little foreign guy who is always trying to make ends meet against injustice (not to mention police who are supposed to be justified) and the myriad of lies we are fed. Eat up.

Does anyone have anything good to say about Thailand on these forums. Seems strange you all choose to live here but only critisive.

The obvious positive point about those news / announcements is they are making me laugh. Good for health, or actually better than thinking too much about how such stupid things can be announced.

About the massive amount of negative points on this forum .. well ... that's the Thaivisa signature. If those comments weren't there, I guess nobody will read the forum. Who cares reading about how genius those police ideas are ?

I don't think it's that easy to find another country with so many news to comment on. It's probably why so many people have left their home country. Just for the pleasure of bashing official PR communication.

That's Amazing Thailand !

Perhaps when Thailand comes up with rational and smart idea then people will say something positive to say.

Just a thought

Thank you Thailand for bringing a smile to my face. Today has been a tough day in the office, i can always count on thaivisa at the expense of the thai police to cheer me. funny story! i feel so much safer now....

BTW when i get pulled over by some traffic cops doing an illegal road stop.... do i also report that to 7-11or should i report that to the post office... tesco.... 55555 ....i love this country!!!!

As usual all the negative people fall out to judge, complain, and make fun of anything that the Thailand tried to do. Probably many who are spouting off do not even live here, OR just want to be heard by anybody. Sad.

Sorry we don't have time.

Please go to the nearest 7-11, they will help you.

Which twelve? There must be over 100 7-11's in pattaya?

Yes, that's it again. Both ciaociao and kuffki have very, very valid points.

Of course, those who defend idiot-ism, put your rose glasses back on and tell us to leave.

That's the only suggestion you've ever had to improve Thailand. Clearly criticism towards improvement, understanding and awareness is not your idea of an improvement.

Two thing, with this being Thailand. First there will be a minimum purchase, to make a report, say 100baht and every staff member will want to hear what your complaint is……..It may be a good story to tell their friends later.

Just a suggestion regarding the language barrier, 7/11 could employ a flip chart, (hung where the fags are) and one of the staff slowly turn the pages, each page depicting a different scenario, theft, stabbing, con, bar girl related incident, buggery! 7/11 could make a killing, they could get all the shoppers involved, a bit of a game show, they could call it; "What's your complaint" The best one (in a 24 hour period gets there complaint passed to the BIB.

Dont use the word 'hung' and 'fags' in the same phrase again please, thank you khap.

since this is all about 7-11, just like to mention that today I bought some necessities from the new 7-11 in Pttaya North, soi3.

I had to pay 200 baht and payed with a 1000 baht bill. The guy gave me the change up to 500 Baht (which I didn't realize), then went to a safe to get a 500 baht note, whilst I left the store.

seconds later the guy run after me in the street when I was walking towards my hotel and screamed "Mister". I stopped and he gave me the 500 baht!

Ha ha, they always look confused and sheepish when I asked for marlboruogh lights, with a mumble to another staff member like "ari wa".

Like they're really are gonna understand if I tell them I have been pick-pocketed or whatever, what a joke!

hahaha ... I have the same problem - ask for Marlboro Lights soft-pack (stressing the soft-pack part) an invariably i am handed 9 times outa 10 a box ...

Revert to pasar thai ... Marlboro lite song-on (soft pack) and they give me 2 soft-packs ...

As mentioned before , how are the staff going to handle tourist complaints when they can't understand basic english is beyond me ... they'll probably issue complaint forms all in pasar thai

They can hardly do their own duties, so perhaps they need to improve on that before taking on new duties.

It always takes 3 of them to scan my phone bill when i come to pay it.

By the sound of things you would be one of those "great little helpers" so what training have you done?

Which parts of the posts did you find untrue?

You state they hire pretty good people, must be because they pay such a huge salary and their people are so great that they change every month or so.

Hope to see you in one of those 7-11 stores helping people out with your knowledge and wisdom.<_<

Actually 7/11 does pay pretty good. compared to other places. Last I saw they were offering 240 per day, I only pay my workers 180 a day and that is considered high pay for our area, farmers are paying workers 170 per day. Im in surin but around here they 7/11 only have 2-3 workers and usually do a good job.
