KHARTOUM (BNO NEWS) -- A large passenger plane carrying at least 35 people crashed in Sudan's Darfur region on Thursday, officials said, but few details were immediately available.

The Antonov 24 aircraft crashed just after 4 p.m. local time as it was landing at Zalingei Airstrip in Zalingei, a town in western Sudan. The aircraft was believed to belong to Tarko, which provides passenger flights in the country.

Initial reports indicate that the majority of those on board survived the crash, although at least ten people were said to have been killed. Around a dozen others were injured.

Photos from the scene showed a burning, heavily damaged aircraft. It is believed the aircraft was on a route from Khartoum to Zalingei, with a scheduled stopover in El Fasher.
