Israeli security forces arrest Palestinian lawmaker

JERUSALEM, ISRAEL (BNO NEW) — Israeli security forces in an overnight operation arrested a member of the Palestinian Hamas movement in the West Bank city of Hebron, local media reported Wednesday.

Nayef Rajoub, 52, Palestinian Minister for Religious Affairs and representative in the Legislative Council in the Palestinian government, was arrested after Israeli troops raided his house located in Kariseh neighborhood, west of Hebron, He was reportedly transported to a detention camp where he was to be questioned.

After the operation, security forces cordoned off the area and searched the house for documents, reports say.

Rajoub had been previously arrested in June 2006 and served 50 months in prison, almost four years. He had just been released last June.
