SAN MIGUEL (BNO NEWS) -- More than 80 people were killed on Wednesday when a fire broke out at a prison near the Chilean capital, local media reported.

The El Mercurio newspaper reported that the fire broke out at around 6 a.m. local time, affecting the third floor of a prison in San Miguel, close to the Chilean capital.

Colonel Jaime Concha, the head of operation at the prison, said at least 81 people had been killed, according to the newspaper. An unknown number of people had been injured.

"[Rescue workers] acted promptly and expeditiously, but we have a population of around 1,900 inmates," the prison authority told the newspaper. "The information I am giving is so that the families know the situation. We are working to identify the deceased."
