Hi in Ban Dung,

I am not living in the area right now. My wifes family lives in a village about 15k outside. She has been bugging me to move to the village and I keep saying no. I told her I might consider Ban Dung though. How is life for Farangs there? Seems like a nice little town. It also seems that it might be awfully quiet if I don't have a farm or something to tend to. How do you all fill your days? Do they have adsl available? Appreciate any info you can give me.

Will PM you when I get back from Aus on the 19th Oct. In brief the area grows on you after meeting then sorting out the farang you want to socialise with, you will need a certain temperament. Been to a lot worse places. I'm 15km out, as well, to the East.

Hi in BAN DUNG,

I am from Austria and i stay last Februar in the near Ban Dung,

Cityname is BAN QUANG KUNG HUNG or so.

I visit there my Friend Joseph,maybe you know him,he many times go

shoping in Ban Dung.

When you is to boring you can to exerxises,zb. Mountainbiking,Running or

swimming,there is in Udon Thani a University with a 50 meter Pool,

and after swimming you can visit some Bars (320 THB)there or you ask Taxi-driver

for Karaoke-Bar.

Later you are very Fit,you can start in Bangkok-Marathon or in

What you doing for living?work?businnes?

I'm in Bandung, every third weekend, any long weekends and all school holidays. Now we are on the world map, folks! People from Novia Scotia to Timbuktu have heard of Bandung, the name is being whispered in hushed tones around the globe from mosques in Afghanistan to bars in Sydney.Why? you folks are all wondering.

Because last week when The Washington Post claimed various countries had secret USA prisons on their territories holding terrorists Thailand was one of those countries named. And in the papers Bandung was named as the likely place because of the enormous VOA transmitting station there, just 3 miles from my wife and family's house.

Now this claim has been dismissed out of hand by the esteemed PM but as a precaution I suggest we widen this thread to include not only Thaivisa members but also relatives of gentlemen of Middle Eastern origin who may be incarcerated in the area; has anyone in the Bandung area since any Mrs Hambalis shopping in the market,( they may be up to 4 legally)?

If you do, please recommend them to join Thaivisa and as an aside you could discreetly enquire as to the Thaivisa ID Bin Laden is currently posting under.

I have been saying for years that the VOA station is much more than meets the eye:-

a. Never been able to pick up VOA reception on my short wave radio here!!

b. What the he*l is that bloody big, wide Phen road in the middle of no were for if it is not a "Clatons" aircraft runway.

c. The local school principle has been hearing all sorts of things lately and asking me for an explaination??? What the &lt;deleted&gt; do I know.

IMO the Yanks are up to something on this 3200 Rai of land and we mear mortals are not a part of it.

We need to contact The Washington Post immediately, a small retainer fee of 500 dollars each per week, plus free equipment such as binoculars,cameras,hi-tech mobile phones and pick-up trucks will undoubtedly produce something, even if it's only the Naga taking a break from the river Mekhong.

In addition I suggest my cattle are outfitted with infra red eyes and electronic hearing devices are attached to their already large ears. I could graze them on the perimeter of the fence, pointing them in the right direction when their attention wanders.

Perhaps we could also consult Ray23, as an ex-cop from LA his advice could be invaluable.

point b in your post is very interesting, and as you know the road has been widened further downhill to be 4 lanes almost all the way to Ban Dung, a whole squadron could land on that strip.

There is one hotel but a backpacker on the bare bones of his/her arse would not stay there. There are quite a number of good resorts scattered around the town:- Penn (2022) road and the road South to Nong Mek (2096). Most have bunglows with A/C and TV etc. available at good prices as like the remainder of Thailand it is low season here. Sorry I don't have any contact details.

hi , i have a house in ban dung not so far from the pen road hope to return in december ...till them back to work work work need the chang tokens...good luck to the farangs of bandung ps have a few beers for me in the five bell bar and the up2u bar till i come and dring the bars dry yipeeeeeeeee

Got married there (divorced now), kids born there etc. The day I left Thailand I swore I would come back. Well I have been back a few times and still love the place. I am now at a point in time that I am seriously considering the big move. I would probably end up in the Udon Thani, Non Sung area. I am 57 years old and totally fed up (and have been for many years) with life here. The purpose of this post is to ask you folks living in Thailand and specifically Issan, what its going to cost per month to make ends meet. I know that depends on my "lifestyle", but any info I could get would be appreciated. Thank you very much.

OK, ball park figure, nice round number too: $1,000US/mo.

providing:

1) moderate drinking in bars

2) moderate naughty nightlife

3) middle class Thai housing/apartment

4) no expensive hobbies

You'll probably want to get a car, a house, and health insurance, but that will be outside this monthly budget.

Of course, if you meet a the love-of-your-life, then all of the above will quickly go out the window

There are many threads about budget and living cost on ThaiVisa, have a look around.

Menlo Park is nice. Sure love The Left Bank restaurant there.

Advice: Don't come.

"Being fed up" is NO reason to relocate from another country to Isaan. It will lead to broken heart and broken wallet, especially if your finances are such that you have to enquire on the internet about living costs.

I have a house/Bungalow in Ban Dung Pak Tiem, Sangkhom, Udon. Only met 1 ferang Looked like a cross between a hippy and a hells angel!! No conversation in him apparently he's a Yabba person so Im staying well away..........Would love to go out some time in september if anyone is up for it I dont get out much usually stay in the village or journey down to Hua hin for a week or so!

to open a language school there for thais

and possibly find a thai to teach thai to farangs

but i live in hope

not found property there yet but still looking to rent some where to open school

Hi Guys

Good to know there are some expats around Ban Dung, better to know that they own bars. I may be comming there in a couple of months for a holiday, because my wifes family are in the area.

As you may understand, with a limited Thai vocabulary, I don't do a great deal of conversing with the family & sometimes I just need to get away & have a cold beer .

So I am thinking "Up2ubar" may be an exellent retreat for me whilst the women folk get there jollies from walking around the shops & spending cash for no understandable reason.... hehehe

Up2U bar closed probably 3 years ago.

Currently (if you want to communicate with farangs) you have a choice of Eddies (easily the best and most popular), Igloos, and Garys.

Northern Europeans also tend to congregate at Marios, which is primarily a German/Italian restaurant, but also doubles-up as a bar.

All are on the main road through Ban Dung.
