News_Editor
Illegal immigration to Spain decreases by 50 percent 2011-01-18 23:54:57 GMT+7 (ICT) MADRID (BNO NEWS) -- The number of illegal people arriving by boat to Spanish coasts decreased 50.1 percent in 2010, Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said on Tuesday. The number of illegal immigrants went from 7,285 in 2009 to 3,632 last year, according to Rubalcaba. On the Canary Islands, there was a 90 percent decline, with only 196 immigrants from 2,246 in 2009. Meanwhile, the Peninsula and the Balearics presented a decline of 32 percent. The minister attributed the decline to the cooperation with Africa and the Integrated Service of External Surveillance, an operational system used by the civil guard to locate illegal boats. The number of boats went from 413 in 2009 to 338 last year. -- © BNO News All rights reserved 2011-01-
