Six dead after Taliban attack Hungarian oil company convoy in Pakistan

2011-01-21 16:11:44 GMT+7 (ICT)

Islamabad - Six people were killed on Thursday when militants ambushed a convoy of a Hungarian oil company in Pakistan's northwestern region, security officials said.

Two employees returning from work were killed in the attack, while two others were kidnapped. Four soldiers who accompanied the convoy were also killed in the incident in Kohat region, said the area's top administrator, Khalid Umerzai, the daily Népszabadság reported.

The victims worked for the Pakistani subsidiary of Hungarian oil company MOLE.

Pakistan has oil and gas reserves in the south and northwest region, but the presence of the Taliban has made both areas dangerous.

Other local and foreign firms have been attacked previously. A Polish geologist, Piotr Stanczak, was abducted and later executed in mid-2009 after the Pakistani and Polish government failed to pay ransom and release some Taliban militant detainees.

In a separate incident, a Chinese engineer was released unharmed after six months captivity.
