News_Editor
Karzai to inaugurate Afghan parliament on Wednesday 2011-01-23 09:33:45 GMT+7 (ICT) KABUL (BNO NEWS) -- President Hamid Karzai on Saturday offered to inaugurate the country's parliament on Wednesday after intense talks with parliamentary representatives, Pajhwok Afghan News reported. The offer came after parliamentary members on Friday resolved to open the National Assembly on Sunday with or without President Hamid Karzai.
Provisional speaker Muhammad Sarwar Usman Farahi said the MPs had decided to meet Karzai, who just returned from a visit to Russia on Saturday, to discuss the situation. He added that voters had been asking their representatives to start working. Karzai said on Wednesday that Sunday's scheduled opening would be pushed back to February 22 at the request of a special tribunal looking into fraud complaints. The tribunal is currently studying more than 400 cases of alleged fraud in the September 18 parliamentary vote. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) on Friday expressed "deep concern and surprise" at the delay of the inauguration. -- © BNO News All rights reserved 2011-01-
