US State Secretary Clinton calls Iranian regime 'hypocritical,' backs anti-government protests

2011-02-15 12:08:48 GMT+7 (ICT)

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) -- As thousands of anti-government protesters gathered in Iran on Monday, where local reports say one person was shot dead, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton "directly" supported the protests, describing the Iranian regime as "hypocritical."

"Let me very clearly and directly support the aspirations of the people who are in the streets in Iran today," Clinton stated, emphasizing that the U.S. - regarding the situation in Egypt - was against violence, supported the universal human rights of Egypt, and stood for political change with positive outcomes.

The Secretary of State said the U.S. maintains the same stance for Iran. "They deserve to have the same rights that they saw being played out in Egypt and that are part of their own birthright," Clinton said.

"What we see happening in Iran today is a testament to the courage of the Iranian people," Clinton stated, adding that it an "indictment of the hypocrisy of the Iranian regime, a regime which over the last three weeks has constantly hailed what went on in Egypt, and now, when given the opportunity to afford their people the same rights as they called for on behalf of the Egyptian people, once again illustrate their true nature."

Clinton also stated that "there had to be change in the Arab world," again regarding to the situation in Egypt, emphasizing that the changes "must be in response to the Egyptian people's desires."

Likewise, Clinton underlined that "there needs to be a commitment to open up the political system in Iran, to hear the voices of the opposition and civil society."

No official report has been released on Monday's protests but while Iran's Fars news agency reported that one person was shot dead, an undetermined amount of people have been injured and arrested during the protests.

It would be much more hypocritical to ignore the fed-up Iranian people. ;)

I agree. I hope the US finds a discreet way to really help the brave anti-government resistance in Iran.

What makes you think that the "anti-government resistance" in Iran is "brave"?

Is that the business of the USA at all?

No it is the business of the Aussies.

This year they implemented autonomous sanctions against Iran to include

Targeted financial sanctions

Travel restrictions

Arms and strategic goods embargo

Bout time.

Why brave? Are you for real?

Warning, graphic violence

It's the business of the US because the current Iranian regime is a major threat to the entire world.

This is why the protesters must be brave. When politicians are calling for arrests and executions of protesters, it tends to get your heart racing.

Mousavi? Enjoy the 'brave' people ...

Mir-Hossein Mousavi 'involved in massacre', says report

Mir-Hossein Mousavi, the leader of Iran's opposition green movement was involved in the massacre of more than 10,000 political prisoners in 1988, according to a report.

Mr Mousavi, the defeated candidate in last June's presidential election, served as Iran's prime minister when Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the regime's spiritual leader, issued a fatwa that sentenced thousands of political prisoners to death without trial, according to the report by one of Britain's leading human rights lawyers.

Mr Mousavi is one of several prominent Iranian politicians who are accused of implementing the order. According to a detailed report published by Geoffrey Robertson QC, who specialises in human rights law, the prisoners were executed for refusing to recant their political and religious beliefs.

"They were hung from cranes, four at a time, or in groups of six from ropes hanging from the stage of the prison assembly hall," the report states. "Their bodies were doused with disinfectant, packed in refrigerated trucks, and buried by night in mass graves."

The criminal actions of the Iranian government to suppress protests would be one thing.

American propaganda. The US has been installing governments in places like the middle East, Africa, Asian and even thier allies for thier own personal gain and when these governments don't tow the US line then they are removed even by force and a new pro US government is established. This has been happening for decades. The US are the criminals not Iran. The Middle East is devolping and not to the US plan so the US is now scared. Isreal is the last US state in the East and Isreal will fall when the arab Muslim east move. Isreal now stand alone surrounded by many. The US were once a power but are now a crumbling mess. Other countries like China own more US dollars than even the US. America is now yesterday's news. I would hate to see war and death but I think Isreal when confronted lay down arms admit defeat along with the US and let peace previal. America you are stretched, can't afford another war and your allies are fed up dying for your politics. America you are spent and gone forever. The Vikings, the Greeks The Romans and the Americans. All Dynasties come to an end.

QUOTE(Serpentsea):"How 'hypocritical' is US State Secretary Clinton? Who backed the now gone Egyptian leader for years?"

QUOTE(Ulysses G.):"It would be much more hypocritical to ignore the fed-up Iranian people."

Nice spin. Try addressing the post next time instead of deflecting away and bringing up Iran.

The subject of the thread is IRAN, but of course you ignore the fact that your buddy tried to "deflect" the topic to Egypt.

They did this once. It was called the holocaust. It is very unlikely to happen again.
