CAIRO (BNO NEWS) -- CBS News on Tuesday confirmed that one of its correspondents was beaten and sexually assaulted while reporting for the network in the Egyptian capital of Cairo.

The attack happened when CBS News correspondent Lara Logan was covering the celebrations in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Friday for a "60 Minutes" story about the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak. "She and her team and their security were surrounded by a dangerous element amidst the celebration," CBS News said in a statement. "It was a mob of more than 200 people whipped into the frenzy."

The network said Logan was separated from her crew in the crush of the mob. "She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers," CBS News said.

Logan later reconnected with her team and returned to her hotel in Cairo. She returned to the United States on Saturday morning and is recovering in an undisclosed hospital.

At the request of the correspondent, CBS released no details about Logan's current condition or the severity or nature of her injuries.
