News_Editor
At least one dead in violent protests in South Africa 2011-02-16 10:43:29 GMT+7 (ICT) JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA (BNO NEWS) -- At least one person was killed and dozens injured after violent clashes broke out during protests in the eastern region of South Africa, local media reported Tuesday. With one in every four South Africans suffering from unemployment, Tuesday marked the second day of protests in Ermelo, located in South Africa's Mpumalanga province, due to the jobless situation and lack of public services. Protesters closed out streets, began burning tires and throwing stones, while reports say they also opened fire and attacked members of the media, IOL news reported. Anti-riot police reportedly answered by firing gunshots into the air. However, a dead man was later discovered with a gunshot wound in Ermelo's Piet Retief township. Local authorities said 48 people had been arrested, including some youths aged from 10 to 15. The African National Congress condemned the violence. -- © BNO News All rights reserved 2011-02-
