Suvarnabhumi named fifth best airport

Suvarnabhumi Airport has been ranked fifth best in its category of annual capacity of more than 40 million passengers.

In the 2010 list, there were 13 airports rated in the category by Airports Council International (ACI). The top four are in Hong Kong, Beijing, Dubai and Dallas.

According to Airports of Thailand, which operates the Bangkok airport, in 2009, Suvarnabhumi was ranked sixth in the category of airports with capacity of 25 million to 40 million passengers.

In 2010, with the number of passengers reaching 42.7 million, it was moved up to the category of more than 40 million passengers.

The ACI 2010 ranking covered 154 airports across the world. The ranking was based on a satisfaction survey of 260,000 passengers at those airports.

Suvarnabhumi Airport official Wilaiwan Nadwilai said: "AOT is committed to making Suvarnabhumi a top10 airport worldwide."

The top three airports are now Incheon in South Korea, Changi in Singapore and Chek Lap Kok in Hong Kong.

ONE good thing is the quick snack 7-11 mini marks. they have well and truly stamped on the other rip off shop merchants. ( but I was told by an assistant that most things were 2 bht dearer at the airport shops) suppose it was delivery charges. a long way fromBKK. so Mai Sai.... should be 40 bht dearer than the airport for each item....... Are they trying to say that this swampy is better than Dubai. This airport because its brand new, and the expense. shoud be number 1...............................the admin in Thai in all walks is its let down.................the top people are not there on merit as a rule, so how can you hope to have the best.

If the committee that decides was comprised mostly of Asians I would agree with you. That said, So Wanna Boom Boom is still better than any US airport I've ever been in, including Dallas-Ft. Worth! No arguments on the other top 3. Been to each one and they are very nice! I'd also put KL's airport up there too but it's sooo far from town.

Sorry Whybother, I must be senile, was a mistake. I meant Abu Dhabi, which is in my opinion super compared to swampy. What about all the other fabulous airports in the world that hadn't a look in.---- I mentioned it because of its nomination. In shock again at this vote.The airport here is O.K. its the mafias that control it. My point was whoever voted for it, did it without taking into account of it,s (activities) !!!!!

Airports Council International (ACI) has announced the winners of its annual Airport Service Quality (ASQ) awards for 2010.

The results are based on more than 300,000 passenger surveys completed at participating airports. According to ACI, the survey gives a picture of the entire passenger experience, from the moment of arrival at an airport to the departure gate.

The results help airports to identify areas for improvement and prioritise their investments.

The top five are all in the Asia Pacific region, with Seoul Incheon coming first for the sixth consecutive year.

Abu Dhabi only handles 11 million passengers in 2010, so is in a different category.

did this number of 40 mil...cover Thai domestic as well as International ???? is that why its in that category. as Abu doesn't have internal flights. Just curious as to how many internal passengers per year (domestic) then compare the 2. But I understand what you said. As an oldster I,m a bit slow on getting my reading in order, along with my skills on the keyboard. You youngans beat me hands down. hopefully I can improve in these twilight years-cheers to you thanks. GJ

On the Suvarnabhumi Airport Forum in TV, there are a number of posters who would beg to differ. Long queues at immigration, longer queues going out etc. etc.

Sorry - when I just read the headline, I immediately thought that the Nation voted Swampy as the 5th best airport in Thailand.

When it says Incheon, Changi and ChetLapKok are the top three, do they mean in a higher category, or what?. It seems to contradict the 4 named as the top four in the earlier paragraph...Or is a sentence missing?

I have been too a fair few places and i really like suvarnabhumi. I know it has its problems, hawlkers and crooks and etc. but as far as buildings go its a really nice design and a good atmosphere inside, clean comfortable etc....Service i have experienced has always been good. much better than any london airport i have been too. I went through terminal 5 the week it opened and it wasnt great, parts of terminal 4 are hideous and gatwicks tiny. Sure dubai is nice but i think surarnabhumi is better.

This means that Swampy is the 5th best airport in the world that handles over 40 million passnegers, correct? Christ on a bike, those from 6th place and below must be pretty awful. I'm sure the reason it reached over 40 million in 2010 was all the people who wanted to leave once the riots began.

One word - restaurants. After you've passed through immigration where are they? I spend half of my life at that place because of work and the immigration cues must be up amongst the top 5 worst in the world. Not to mention the smiley, happy, welcoming faces of the Immigration clerks at the arrivals desks. Behind the USA they have to be the most miserable and least welcoming!

Who votes for these things??

I find that when visitors come, they haven't been told they are supposed to hate swampy, so they usually say the airport is really nice. I am amazed that expats think poorly of swampy, I guess they have their eyes closed when they are at their homeland airports.

Weve heard this rot before--Dhaka-calcutta-karachi-mumbai-------Swampy is supposed to be in the top 5--thats why posters think its a bad vote----most dont believe it. Can anyone seperate the domestic figures off and then see how many persons used it.

Beijing in the top 5!! ITs terrible, i hate having to travel through it. Its a massive new bullding, ill give them that- unfortunately they forgot to actually put shops in their that passengers needs- you can not even buy a newspaper or book in beijing airport!!!! Decent restaurants? None, just some touristy chinese cr-p.

Swampy and Beijing airports were built using similar thinking- in both cases the goverment wanted a huge building to show off- they just focused on that and forgot all about actually putting things inside it that people need e.g. comfortable seats, waiting areas, decent shops etc.

Last time through I had a very long connection time so the above 2 were important.

Immigration queues IN and OUT are very slow. OK, coming in is understandable, and I have experienced similar in other places, but there is no reason why going out should be slow. Most countries I visit are more than glad to get rid of me as quickly as possible.

If you go to Skytrax and look at airports, BKK has only 3 stars out of 5. This is calculated by actual airport users. And that is likely to go down unless they do something about the horrendous waits at Immigration both arriving and departing. It's a real mess and seems to be getting worse!

The Nation is putting a very positive spin on the ACI report also states that Suvarnabhumi airport fells from 24th place in 2009 to 45th last year in the customer satisfaction category - largely as a result of the chaotic immigration situation and poor cleanliness. That's out of 154 airports surveyed.

Didn't buy enough apparently, unless 5th out of 13 is supposed to be good.

Interviewers obviously didn't make it to ransom rooms where KP customers were held.

For all those singing the praises of Swampy, keep in mind this is a new airport in the region build at great expense. There's not enough lighting, aircon capacity, toilets or seating. The acoustics are miserable and the walking belts only go in one direction. Take a look at the floor and all the cracks breaking up of the floor material. Look at the dirt on all the fixtures. Walk past the restaurants on the mezzanine floor and smell the smoke. And the immigration? My god.

Compared to any airport build in the last 15 years, this place is a joke. And, build at great expense I might add.

BTW, these polls are easy to rig if you hire the right company to help.

I think your missing the point here, we are not discussing the crap state of Heathrow or Dallas or really any other airport but what people think of Swampy.

As an airport it looks very nice {my opinion} it's the rest of it that let's it down, things that have already be pointed out and as for the top places there is a far more welcoming feeling when you step off the plane and enter the terminals.

Swampy's whole infrastructure is to tolerate passengers and overcharge for a very indifferent service and they are not alone in this but perhaps the difference between crappy Heathrow is the total number of passengers handled and the age of some of the terminals.

It's very difficult to modernise when you handle Heathrows numbers but Swampy should improve the service side of their airport, L.O.S. really?.

There are different categories based on number of passengers.

Suvharnibhumi had 42 million pax putting them in the top category of 13 airports, and Incheon had 33 million pax putting them in the second category.

I haven't been able to find the original report, which would answer a lot more questions.

Structurally the airport is good, a reasonable assortment of shops etc. Direction signs could be better displayed and too much walking for my liking, but this seems to be common to all airports.

What really lets the place down is the staff, not just immigration, although they seem to set the overall tone, even the duty free shops have surly staff.

It is an international airport, English is the International language, yet no one, including the airport police and immigration speak it.

Even with the pestering touts on leaving, taxis not having close access to the entrance doors, the miserable immigration with its long waits, the terrible vertical access on the land side and the useless clutter of overpriced shops and restaurants on the air side, the worst thing is the huge walks to get to the gates when departing, with virtually no travelators. Whilst walking is generally a good thing, I for one can do without a 500-metre walk to get to my plane, given all the other stresses involved in catching a flight.

Why are there loads of travelators when you arrive, but virtually none when you depart? It couldn't be because that might whizz you past all the shops and restaurants, could it?
