AN INVESTIGATION IS UNDER WAY OVER THE AMMONIA INCIDENT AT A FACTORY IN NAKHON RATCHASIMA, WHERE 178 WORKERS HAD TO BE SENT TO HOSPITAL

The labour minister has ordered officials to take care of the employees affected by ammonia in a frozen chicken factory in Nakhon Ratchasima.

Labour Minister Somsak Thepsuthin (สมศักดิ์ เทพสุทิน) has commented on the case where employees of Laemthong (แหลมทอง) Poultry Co. Ltd. inhaled an ammonia substance in the factory, and 178 employees had to be sent to hospital.

Mr. Somsak said the punishment the employer will receive will be 1 year of imprisonment and a 200,000 baht fine. However, the investigation must determine whether or not the occurrence was a result of an accident, or the fault of the employer.

Nevertheless, the factory owner has admitted responsibility for the incident and is ready to arrange medical expenses for the employees.

Minister Somsak has also ordered an inspection of safety equipment in the factory, and further legal proceeding will proceed if the case was found to have been rooted from negligence in maintenance. Mr. Somsak added that the 178 workers were included in the social security system, and thus will receive benefits from the fund.
