Explosion rocks quake-hit Japanese nuke plant

State of emergency declared at five reactors in wake of quake, tsunami

TOKYO — An explosion was heard and smoke was seen at a quake-hit Japanese nuclear power plant on Saturday, officials said.

Several workers were injured by the blast at Fukushima Unit 1, NHK reported.

Japan earlier warned of a meltdown after the nuclear reactor was damaged when a massive earthquake and tsunami struck the northeast coast.

Experts said any threat of widespread radiation leaks would be contained as long as the reactor's outer container is intact.

Authorities have been scrambling to reduce pressure at two nuclear power plants in Fukushima, 150 miles north of Tokyo, damaged by Friday's devastating quake .

Two reactors had lost cooling ability at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Because of the overheating, a meltdown was possible at one of the reactors, said Ryohei Shiomi, an official with Japan's nuclear safety commission.

But even if there was a meltdown, it wouldn't affect people outside a six-mile radius, he said. Most of the 51,000 residents living within the danger area had been evacuated, he said.

Authorities detected eight times the normal radiation levels outside the facility and 1,000 times normal inside Unit 1's control room.

UN: Japan Requests Disaster Help From Four Foreign Teams

The United Nations says Japan has asked several foreign search and rescue teams to help Japanese authorities deal with the aftermath of a major earthquake and tsunami that devastated parts of Honshu island on Friday.

The Geneva-based U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says Japan approved the arrival of four specialist teams from Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and the United States. It says at least 45 nations were ready to send aid to Japan if requested.

This is a warning aimed at Japanese in the area of the reactors... not people in Thailand -- at least not yet.

Warning from NHK, 1)Do not open door 2)Do not use air fan. 3)Stay indoor if outside. Something v serious might have happened. /RT @veen_NT:

NHK saying radiation levels outside plant measured as 1000+ millisievert (mSv)... People exposed at that level for one hour would receive the amount of radiation they'd normally receive from natural sources in a year. Measurement taken at main entrance to Plant No. 1.

Wiki - Natural background radiation comes from two primary sources: cosmic radiation and terrestrial sources. The worldwide average background dose for a human being is about 2.4 millisievert (mSv) per year.[3] This exposure is mostly from cosmic radiation and natural radionuclides in the environment (including those within the body). This is far greater than human-caused background radiation exposure, which in the year 2000 amounted to an average of about 5 μSv per year from historical nuclear weapons testing, nuclear power accidents and nuclear industry operation combined,[4] and is greater than the average exposure from medical tests, which ranges from 0.04 to 1 mSv per year.

do not eat vegetables until it was checked by the govt.

People are getting with 1 hour exposure to radiation the amount of one year exposure there. It's probably going worse.

The reactor in Japan is 100 times more powerful than the one in Chernobyl. (Russia Today) /RT @Vanalli:

It's a light water reactor and saver than the Chernobyl reactor was. Any other reactor system would have blown up by now. It's unlikely that a light water reacor explodes, but who knows.

dont know where they are getting that from..... Chernobyl was a 1000MW unit , and beleive the units in Japan are a maxium of around 750 MW....therefore smaller units than Chernobyl

Thats not a reactor containment building....they are not built of structural steel, they are meter's thick concrete.....looking at this looks more like a turbine hall
