TheWalkingMan
MSNBC Explosion rocks quake-hit Japanese nuke plant State of emergency declared at five reactors in wake of quake, tsunami TOKYO — An explosion was heard and smoke was seen at a quake-hit Japanese nuclear power plant on Saturday, officials said. Several workers were injured by the blast at Fukushima Unit 1, NHK reported. Japan earlier warned of a meltdown after the nuclear reactor was damaged when a massive earthquake and tsunami struck the northeast coast. Experts said any threat of widespread radiation leaks would be contained as long as the reactor's outer container is intact. Authorities have been scrambling to reduce pressure at two nuclear power plants in Fukushima, 150 miles north of Tokyo, damaged by Friday's devastating quake . Two reactors had lost cooling ability at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Because of the overheating, a meltdown was possible at one of the reactors, said Ryohei Shiomi, an official with Japan's nuclear safety commission. But even if there was a meltdown, it wouldn't affect people outside a six-mile radius, he said. Most of the 51,000 residents living within the danger area had been evacuated, he said. Authorities detected eight times the normal radiation levels outside the facility and 1,000 times normal inside Unit 1's control room. Here is a video link taken by someone watching it on television. The Geneva-based U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says Japan approved the arrival of four specialist teams from Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and the United States. It says at least 45 nations were ready to send aid to Japan if requested. Voice of America

jfchandler
NHK saying radiation levels outside plant measured as 1000+ millisievert (mSv)... People exposed at that level for one hour would receive the amount of radiation they'd normally receive from natural sources in a year. Measurement taken at main entrance to Plant No. 1. Wiki - Natural background radiation comes from two primary sources: cosmic radiation and terrestrial sources. The worldwide average background dose for a human being is about 2.4 millisievert (mSv) per year.[3] This exposure is mostly from cosmic radiation and natural radionuclides in the environment (including those within the body). This is far greater than human-caused background radiation exposure, which in the year 2000 amounted to an average of about 5 μSv per year from historical nuclear weapons testing, nuclear power accidents and nuclear industry operation combined,[4] and is greater than the average exposure from medical tests, which ranges from 0.04 to 1 mSv per year.
