Five people killed, two injured by gunmen in funeral in northern Mexico

SINALOA, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- Five people on Sunday night were killed and two more injured by gunmen during a funeral in northern Mexico, Noroeste newspaper reported.

On Sunday night, a group of at least 15 armed gunmen stormed into a funeral home in Guamuchil, Sinaloa state. Relatives and friends were inside when the attack took place at about 9.30 p.m. local time.

The attackers opened fire at the people attending the funeral of a man who was recently murdered. The armed group fled the scene in ten vans before police forces arrived at the funeral home located in Javier Mina Avenue in downtown Guamuchil.

Authorities said that the gunmen entered the building and took three men out and shot them. Then they fired at others who were in the inside while escaping. The attackers used AK-47 weapons.

Three people were killed in the parking lot and two others were found dead inside the funeral home. Paramedics arrived at the scene and treated two individuals wounded and transported to a nearby hospital.

An investigation was launched to determine the cause of the murders. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The funeral was for Arnoldo Salomon Vizcarra, a local resident who was murdered last Saturday in the state of Nayarit, south of Sinaloa.

In addition, five people were killed in Sinaloa state over the last 24 hours. In the port city of Mazatlan, five bodies were found in three different sites. One dismembered body was located in Ejercito Mexicano Avenue.

Two more bodies were found in La Noria neighborhood. The two victims were brothers and one was a 16-year-old boy. In the port, police found two unidentified bodies covered with 'tortillas'.

Overall ten people were killed in Sinaloa, a drug-plagued state in northern Mexico. The region is marred with violence as drug-related criminal organizations frequently clash with police and other rival groups.
