New Zealand parliament briefly evacuated due to suspicious package

2011-03-17 08:03:49 GMT+7 (ICT)

WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND (BNO NEWS) -- New Zealand police on Thursday afternoon evacuated the country's Parliament following the discovery of a suspicious package, which was later deemed to be safe.

New Zealand Police said a box was delivered to Parliament shortly after midday on Thursday afternoon. "[An] x-ray machine showed wires and coils which led staff to treat it with caution," said Wellington Police Emergency Response Manager Acting Inspector Scott Miller.

Miller said the box was later declared safe and said it contained a model of a hydrogen energy converter. The person who delivered the package was also located by police.

"It was his intention to show members of Parliament his model/invention, which is believed to convert water to energy sources," a police statement said. "Evacuated staff have now returned to Parliament."
