cmsally Posted September 20, 2005 Share Posted September 20, 2005 Been told not worth trying to get to Hang Dong. Some areas heavily flooded and if not traffic gridlocked. Front of Kullapan View was flooded but heard that flooding in Kul. 5 had receded this morning. Front of Hang Dong market normally floods so that should be a no go and some areas of Sanpatong anywhere from knee to chest level. (Ban Gat , Sanpatong at chest level). Lunch will be served soon by long tail boat apparently! Had a phone call from friends in Chiang Dao yesterday to tell people (in Chiang Mai) to pack up things on ground floor if their houses flood. ThaiPauly Posted September 20, 2005 Share Posted September 20, 2005 Just been to hang Dong and back, took 2 hours and I am pretty g;ad I have a 4x4. there is very severe flooding. DON't go to Hang Dong/Bantawai today. Most places are closed because they are flloded out or closed because they are helping the flood victims. water in some areas is over a metre deep. The incoming highway to Chaing mai is closed with all traffic diverted into the outgoing lane. Happy to say there are loads of Thais with their trousers rolled up happily helping the stranded cars to get out or push them through, even the police are doing their job with theor shoes off and trousers rolled up! I am a few klics North of you and on the river. It is now about 4cm below entry into the lower level of my house, and some lower bldgs are already in up to a metre of water. The river is still rising but at not too fast a clip, but still rising. I would estimate we are about 10 cm below the level of last months flood, maybe we will surpass that mark as the 40 year flood mark. Good luck to you Wimpy. Looks like I may be shutting down all power in a bit. Good luck to all the rest that are now or will be affected by this rising water. Hope to talk tomorrow. Still waiting for any flood warning from the city or media, or anybody. jomama Posted September 21, 2005 Share Posted September 21, 2005 Some quick notes: Wednesday morning, 9 a.m. The road where I live next to the river is flooded to the north and south (again). Nong Hoi area flooded -- big meeting between ministers from China and Thailand underway at the Sheraton Hotel, so they get to witness it first hand. Central Chiang Mai reported flooded in many places, but no first-hand knowledge. Canal Road and CMU area reported clear of any flooding this morning. Still seeing a lot of debris racing down the river, so some place(s) getting torn up. Overcast with dark rainclouds to the north -- more to come? Sandbags all along the river in my area, people out in force, local gov't. appear to be doing a good job. Not as bad as the last one. People certainly much better prepared. I guess it just goes to show how wide spread the effects of this thing are. I would hope to say that maybe the worst is over barring any rain in the next few days . The tide seemed to turn between 5 and 6 AM this morning [Wednesday] and the water level is slowly going down. Now just hope no dam operator decides to feel the need to protect his dam and opens the gates too soon. I would say that this one came within cm's of the level of the 14th August flood. Its a little early yet to say but it appears that maybe this one didn't leave as much silt or still we just have not seen it. Now to start with the wash down all over again , the same ground covered 3 times now in the last 5 weeks, here along the river. Replace just replaced doors and repaint just repainted walls yet again. (along the east bank of the river) from the Gymkhana club to the electric company! From what my untrained eye sees in your photos, it doesn't look like the water level is an awful lot lower than it was last month during the big flood. Anybody care to comment...? I recall reading about a month back about some washout warnings on highway 106 across the mountains, but nothing more recent than that. I suppose that for as long as this rainy season lasts, the danger is there. If you plan on traveling north via 106, might be best to inquire with some of the locals in Thoen before leaving Highway 1 (assuming you are coming from the south).
