No sorry I don't. The last time I went there was on the 14th of last month! Parked my car behind the Mae Ping hotel in a dry soi, came back two hours later to find it in two foot of water. It's never been the same since

Why not call the tourist police and ask? or you could call the "Golden Arches" on the pretext of ordering a "Big Mac" and ask them how the water is outside their door

This has been much worse than the previous two floods. I have not been able to leave the area, but yesterday morning the man who owns a huge house across the road was out and about watching as the road was a tributary of the river. We talked for a bit and he told me the water on Chang Klan Night Bazarre was 150 cm. deep. He should know -- he owns the Porn Ping Hotel.

The big water hit at about midnight Thursday. Today at noon Saturday we're digging out pretty well, but the roads are still flooded.

I can talk in only simple words because I have been up on and off since Thursday night. Hope to sleep soon.

I think the reason not too many people have posted about this is because they too have been busy with other things -- like muddy water.

Anyway things are getting better. We hope it doesn't rain.

I think that this flood has been under-reported, but we're weary, and so I imagine are the media -- floods in Chiang mai are not news anymorte.

George, the simple reposting of copy and paste from various Thai govenment news mouthpieces is not that productive. If you want to offer a service why don't you ask your various moderators in Chiang Mai to do something? Or at least say something?

I have just returned from the Duang Tawang hotel (time stamp 13.20 hrs) and the water is approximately 30-40 cm deep at the junction of Loi Kroh Road and Changklan Road. In other words up to one's knees, and not up to your neck as the "owner of the Porn Ping" would have it.

Just like the Thai press they love to sensationalise things. Yes the floods are devastating for all concerned, but after twenty years here, I'm used to them

Thai online news reported on September 30, 2005 at 5:10pm that the Night Bazaar area saw about 50cm flood. Road was closed to vehicles which doesn’t have need to access. …. A large number of sandbags were used to protect the areas, especially the underground levels of the Night Bazaar and various buildings in the area.

Nong Hoi area saw 1m of flood water.

All the sand bags seemed to redirect the water into different places. Many people in Nong Hoi said water not so high but then got more flooding after the city area.

Yesterday on road behind Muang mai market (past tennis courts) water half way up door of high 4 wheel drive vehicle. It would have been higher around Prince Royal & British Council because no vehicles could go through.

Yet again many people have been devestated, although some were more prepared.

Before they start looking at complicated dams and dykes etc. they should start on a serious very big reforestation project, because this is one of the main causes and will only get worse if nothing is done.

One Thai media reported the damage as huge.:

Mr. Narong Tananuwat, president of Chiangmai’s Chamber of Commerce said that although the effect from the current flood is not as severe as the one in August, due to better preperation; both from warning and from staging sandbags. The damage to properties may be less, but the economic losses in business opportunities was large. Water flooded the important economic area of Chiangmia, especially Waroros market, Night Bazaar, and all the hotels in the Chang Klan area. When all damages to buildings, residences, and all businesses are included, the hit should be between B8-10bn bahts.

Stateman's note: it seems that jomama made a good observation here. I do notice that the Thai media didn't splash this flood as major news account as the one in August. To find them, I have to dig deep into the media's websites.

I am sure for the people who have to go through the movings, cleaning up, etc., it is probably just as bad.

This was so for Chiangmai. However it seems Lumpang get it much worse this time. Thai media reported an 81 years old person testifiying that he never saw anything as bad as this one. See my posting about damage to Lumpang elsewhere in this site.

A bit of positive news is the mentioning by http://www.manager.co.th/ that Ping river is expected to return to normal in 2-3 days, after all the (flood) water empties into the lake at Doi Tao (A. Doi Tao, Chiangmai) and Bhumibol Dam in Tak province.

I just returned from a motorbike ride on the middle ring road south of town (time: 13:00). The river was at or just below the level of the road that runs on the west bank of the Ping through Pa Daet (that's a pretty high concrete river bank if you are familiar with the area in drier times). No water on the main highway except one short section, but there was water in all of the neighborhoods that the highway passes by. The water doesn't look too deep but nor does it look to be going anywhere soon. The water extends much further on either side of the river than one might expect. Both the railway tracks and the new highway that runs on the east side of the tracks were submerged where the middle ring road crosses both.

Old man river doesn't seem in any hurry to go back home within the banks. Prior floods have had the river receding much quicker. This time the river has receded just 28cm in the past 35hrs.

Less than a cm per hour.

Could be there is just still too much run-off from the north.

I also read elsewhere that it has been raining (october 1, 2005 report). So likely water from further north are still coming in.

Chiangrai been mostly sunny with no rain for 24 hours. No more heading your way from here.

The Thai media reported major sangbagging for Damrey. So not surprising if there is a bit of the New Orleans levee effect. Water in some area now can't get back out because of the obstacles. They reported a massive number of pumps deployed, though. So hopefully things will be taken of.

The railroad between the train station and Sarapee was reported to be under water. They had to use bus to transport train passengers to Lumphun.

Funny thing was yesterday the media reported that the government moved heavy equipment to remove a few small dams perceived to be blocking the normal water flow. I think they are in Sarapee and another location which I don't remember. Soon as the people heard it, they came to protest. Police were called, and more police were notified. The sheriff reported up to the Minister of Interior asking for course of action. The minister asked the PM, but no answer. So the gov. retreated.

These were the dams which a deputy PM and the PM gave interview that they would remove.

Made it back to Chiang Mai so I went flood-hunting but I was a bit 'disappointed'.. It seems fairly controlled at the moment.

In my experience, anybody with such an ego problem as this was guaranteed to RTU - fail - be tossed out onto their a#se - be found totally unacceptable.

I'm now closing the thread. It seems to have lost it's track. Besides, the rainy season should have thrown it's final punch and we are now looking forward to several months of relative dryness and some idyllic cool weather.

(The pond and stream in my garden are now lower than they have been for three months. Always a sign of the seasons end.)
