News_Editor
Bahraini government bans opposition newspaper 2011-04-03 17:58:10 GMT+7 (ICT) MANAMA (BNO NEWS) -- Bahraini authorities on late Saturday evening decided to ban the opposition newspaper Al-Wasat, the government announced on Sunday, in what appeared to be a move to further crack down on anti-government protesters. The Arabic-language newspaper is widely circulated in Bahrain and has extensively covered the anti-government protests which began in mid-February. But the government has accused Al-Wasat of using old footage for its current reports and said the paper used fabricated names when claiming protesters were beaten by security forces. In a statement released by the state-run Bahrain News Agency (BNA) on Sunday, the government accused Al-Wasat of publishing "unethical and unprofessional" reports. It said the government had suspended the newspaper and would refer the matter to the appropriate authorities. As a result of the ban, Al-Wasat was unable to publish its print report on Sunday and its website was difficult to reach from the Persian Gulf country. It was not immediately clear how long the ban would last. -- © BNO News All rights reserved 2011-04-
