News_Editor Posted April 3, 2011 Share Posted April 3, 2011 One student killed in Bangladesh protest 2011-04-03 23:42:30 GMT+7 (ICT) DHAKA, BANGLADESH (BNO NEWS) -- A student was killed and several others injured on Sunday in Bangladesh during a protest against a recently adopted women's policy, Press Trust of India reported. Police opened fire after clashing with hundreds of students carrying bamboo sticks and stones at an Islamic school in the south-western town of Jessore. Protesters marched through the city chanting slogans against the government's move to ensure equal property rights for women since they believe it is anti-Islamic. A local journalist told Press Trust of India that one student, who was identified as Hossain Ahmed, died instantly when a bullet pierced through his back. Police denied this, saying the student was killed accidentally by the protesters as they were using firearms.

 Protesters wanted to draw support for a nationwide strike on Monday. The government said the policy doesn't contradict Islam and blamed the group for misleading people by misinterpreting the policy.
