CAIRO (BNO NEWS) -- Hundreds of Egyptians on Sunday gathered in front of the Tunisian embassy in Cairo to apologize for the riots that took place during a football match on Saturday, Ahram Online reported.

Around 1,000 Egyptians chanted pro-Tunisia slogans after thousands of football fans stormed the pitch at Cairo stadium. Angry hooligans threw stones and damaged the goal's posts after the Egyptian team Zamalek had a goal disallowed for offside during a match with Tunisia's Club Africain.

The match was called off.

Facebook pages were created shortly afterwards, calling for a gathering in front of the Tunisian embassy in order to apologize to the North African country for the assaults.

Several banners and placards written in Arabic and French read "I'm sorry" while the youth chanted "Egypt and Tunisia are one revolution."

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak resigned from the presidency after weeks of massive anti-government protests inspired by the Tunisian revolution that ousted President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali.
